Facebook Provides Robert Mueller with Facebook Ad Data Involving Russia

An internal review by Facebook founded fake accounts from Russia sought to inflame political tensions ahead of the 2016 US elect

Facebook on Wednesday said an operation, likely based in Russian Federation, spent $100,000 (around Rs 64 lakh) on advertisements promoting divisive messages during the 2016 United States Presidential elections on the social media platform.

It said it had discovered that the $100,000 had been used to buy roughly 3,000 ads connected to 470 accounts all "likely" associated with each other and operated out of Russian Federation.

Alex Stamos, Facebook's security officer outlined that the company was cooperating with federal inquiries in a bid to influence operations during the 2016 U.S presidential election.

Facebook's concession that it sold $100,000 in ads to Russian-linked accounts a year ago may be "just the tip of the iceberg" of how social networks were used to interfere in the election, warned the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The Post's report added that Facebook officials "declined to say which candidate the ads favored", but since we already know Russian Federation was responsible for an espionage campaign meant to put Donald Trump in power, there's no great mystery here.

"Our analysis suggests these accounts and pages were affiliated with one another and likely operated out of Russian Federation, " he wrote.

That said, Facebook has reiterated the fact that they don't allow inauthentic accounts on Facebook and have since shut down accounts that they identified as such and were still active.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) said yesterday that it uncovered a massive plot by foreign agents to wreak havoc by spreading misinformation leading up to last year's hotly-contested USA presidential election.

Xbox is Getting Keyboard and Mouse Support
Mr Ybarra reassured console players that there would be functionality, allowing them to choose whether to choose their opponents. Because we know that gifting isn't 'far off , ' it's safe to say that the feature is the one coming sooner rather than later.

Facebook has since shared their findings with USA authorities and is working with them on the investigation.

Gizmodo contacted Facebook for more information about the ad buys but had not heard back at time of writing.

Facebook has turned over its data on ads bought by a Russian company during the 2016 election to Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, reports on Wednesday said. While some of the ads expressly mentioned Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, the majority simply promoted "divisive" views on things like gun and gay rights, discrimination, and immigration.

The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee said that Twitter is planning to give Congress an analysis of Russian activity on its platform, Reuters reported Thursday. There were over 3,000 adverts working on this to influence people of the United States during the elections.

US election law bars foreign nationals and foreign entities from spending money to expressly advocate the election or defeat of a candidate.

Facebook announced Wednesday that they discovered about $100,000 worth of political ads purchased over the last two years by fake accounts that "likely operated out of Russian Federation".

We know we have to stay vigilant to keep ahead of people who try to misuse our platform.
