Narendra Modi Meets Suu Kyi, Discusses India-Myanmar Relations

Indian Prime Minister blames Rohingya violence on extremists

The prime minister's visit to Myanmar comes close on the heels of a spike in ethnic violence with Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine state. "We hope they will soon be reunited with their families in Myanmar", Modi said.

In a Facebook statement, Aung San Suu Kyi said the government had "already started defending all the people in Rakhine in the best way possible".

India has committed development assistance to Rakhine state in Myanmar where large-scale violence blamed on the minority Rohingya Muslim community has claimed the lives of security personnel and innocent people and triggered a mass exodus, Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar said on Wednesday.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said Rohingyas are illegal immigrants and will be deported. About 1.25 lakh Rohingya refugees have crossed into Bangladesh in the last two weeks after a fresh surge of violence. He had earlier come here in 2014 to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean)-India Summit.

"Prime Minister Modi and Councillor Aung San Suu Kyi meet in Myanmar, discuss further cementing of India-Myanmar relations", PMO tweeted.

India too has invested heavily in connectivity projects through Myanmar - such as the Kaladan multi-modal project that involves developing a port, an inland waterways terminal and a road.

The potentially fractious Commons debate comes as tensions mount between London and Brussels over the progress of negotiations. May has said there will be proper scrutiny, but some MPs fear it will give ministers sweeping new powers.

He also presented the Myanmar president a reproduction of a 1841 map of a stretch of the River Salween (that flows from the Tibetan Plateau into the Andaman Sea) and a sculpture of the Bodhi tree.

Prime Minister Modi hailed the meeting, during which they discussed steps to deepen the "historical relationship" between the two neighbours, as "wonderful". Several other agreements were also signed between the two countries.

■ Would like to thank India for taking a strong stand on the terror threat that Myanmar faced recently: State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

Suu Kyi was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for her work in bringing democracy to Myanmar, but some have called for her Prize to be taken back.

"We have a long border with Myanmar (1643-kilometer-long) where we have security concerns, there are certain insurgents groups from India that find shelters across this border", Misri told ANI in an exclusive interview.
