Four more THAAD anti-ballistic missile launchers will be installed this week at a USA military base in South Korea, Yonhap news agency reported on Wednesday, citing South Korea's defence ministry.

Meanwhile, North Korea shows no signs of ending its nuclear and ballistic missile tests, calling its recent nuclear test and other "self-defense" measures a "gift package" for the USA, warning that others are on the way if Washington continues its "reckless provocations".

Defense chiefs of Seoul and Washington agreed on Tuesday to strengthen the regular deployment of U.S. strategic military assets in response to North Korea's latest nuclear test. On Monday, U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis warned North Korea of "total annihilation".

In a statement summarizing the conversation, White said Mattis assured Song that the United States remains ironclad in its commitment to South Korea's defense.

THAAD is an acronym for Terminal High Altitude Area Defence, a US-designed anti-ballistic missile defence system.

In a 20-minute phone call with Putin, Moon also urged the U.N. Security Council to review measures to cut off sources of North Korea's foreign currencies, including banning countries from importing North Korean workers.

Two truck-mounted launchers and a powerful X-band radar are now in operation at the base.

He complimented Mr Putin and the Russian government over what he said were diverse efforts to find diplomatic solutions to the problem.

"One shouldn't give in to emotions and drive North Korea into a corner", he continued, adding that all parties need to show composure and avoid "steps that lead to an escalation of tension".

The South Korean ministry said the extra interceptors would help the country brace for a possible crisis stemming from Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs. He said it "offers a genuine way to defuse the tensions and a step-by-step settlement".
