Millions of Time Warner Customer Records Exposed in Third-Party Data Leak

Around 4 million Time Warner personal records exposed in data leak

A researcher for Kromtech discovered records for more than four million customers of Charter division Time Warner Cable and other companies' data that the research firm says Broadsoft stored on Amazon.com Inc.'s cloud service. In some cases, there were duplicated records, implying that the 4 million leaks may be half.

Kromtech said it would take "weeks" to sort through the files, which amount to more than 600 GB of data.

According to a report published on Kromtech's MacKeeper Security Research Center, two cloud-based data repositories managed by BroadSoft Inc. that contained sensitive customer information were configured to enable public access, leaving the information exposed.

In 2016, Charter Communications became the owner of Time Warner Cable and changed its name into Spectrum.

Other databases revealed billing addresses, phone numbers, and other contact info for at least hundreds of thousands of TWC subscribers.

The repositories also included internal company records, including SQL database dumps, internal emails and code containing the credentials for accessing external systems and access logs.

Security company Kromtech found 600GB of unprotected data on an Amazon server last month.

Ponderosa Fire grows to 3507 acres in Butte County
The wildfire is burning in the sparsely populated area east of Lake Oroville, about 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of Sacramento. Authorities said John Ballenger, 29, was arrested on suspicion of starting a campfire outside of a designated campground.

"[The dump] contains more than 4 million records, spanning the time period 11-26-2010 - 07-07-2017, with Transaction ID, user names, Mac addresses, Serial Numbers, Account Numbers, Service, Category details, and more", Kromsoft writes in its security notice. Engineers are deemed to have accidentally leaked not only partner data but also internal sensitive data to malicious individuals.

Charter clarified that once the unlocked server was discovered, Broadsoft immediately removed the information and began a joint investigation into the incident.

Charter Communications, the parent company of Time Warner Cable, said users' financial information had not been exposed and the data largely concerned former or "legacy" customers.

"We continue to work closely with our customers to ensure the privacy of their data and to assure them that their information and that of their end-users is secure", it added.

TWC, which was acquired by Charter Communications a year ago and is now called Spectrum, said the data related to users of the MyTWC mobile application used to remotely manage accounts, which was developed by BroadSoft.

The company said that there is now no indication that Charter's systems were impacted, but advised its customers who do use the MyTWC app to change their login credentials.
