Ponderosa Fire grows to 3507 acres in Butte County

Fire in Butte County leads to evacuations

Bone-dry conditions, high winds and triple-digit temperatures pose "an imminent threat" to residents, Bullock said in the disaster declaration, which would allow the state to mobilize additional Montana National Guard troops and tap other state resources to combat the blazes.

Elsewhere in California, more than 1,000 firefighters were able to slow the growth of a almost 5-square-mile wildfire (13-square-kilometer) overnight near the town of Oroville, an area already hard-hit by fire and a massive evacuation earlier this year caused by damage to sections of the nation's tallest dam.

The Ponderosa Fire has grown to over 3,500 acres, has destroyed 10 homes and is still threatening about 500 more.

An official says firefighters are battling a lightning-sparked wildfire in a remote part of the vast former national nuclear proving ground north of Las Vegas.

Firefighters are dumping retardant on the blaze and have contained 30% of it but fear new pockets could break out because of the heat. More than 1,000 nuclear detonations occurred at the former Nevada Test Site north of Las Vegas from 1951 to 1992.

Fire officials say the estimated burn area almost doubled after a flyover Thursday but the blaze is still far from the celebration in the Black Rock Desert.

More than 1,600 firefighters are battling the so-called Ponderosa Fire, another natural disaster striking the U.S. while the South battles tropical storm Harvey.

About 58 homes near the park were destroyed earlier this summer.

The 10,600 square miles (27,500 square kilometers) that have burned at this point rank the 2017 wildfire season as the third worst in the last decade.

The wildfire is burning in the sparsely populated area east of Lake Oroville, about 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of Sacramento.

Authorities said John Ballenger, 29, was arrested on suspicion of starting a campfire outside of a designated campground.
