Redskins talk second year safety Su'a Cravens, 22, out of retirement

Fantasy Football Breaking News

The Washington Redskins were sent scrambling Sunday morning when projected starting strong safety Su'a Cravens informed team officials and teammates that he will retire just one year after the organization selected him in the second round of the National Football League draft.

Defensive coordinator Joe Barry started Cravens as an inside linebacker his rookie year, believing that his athleticism would serve the team well in pass coverage against running backs and tight ends.

This will give Washington an exemption for Cravens on its 53-man roster. (He also saw time at linebacker last season, as he did in college.) He injured his knee in the team's first preseason game and had surgery to fix a torn meniscus but was expected to be ready for the opener against the Eagles. Cravens had played in just one preseason game this year, Washington's opener against the Ravens.

That's why this report is so alarming for the Redskins.

Investment in youth development, a stadium and other infrastructure is allowed and offset against any loss greater than that.

"Shocking", Redskins safety D.J. Swearinger said upon hearing the news. "He has to handle what he needs to handle, whether mental or with his family". During the offseason Washington moved Cravens to the safety position at his request, but now he may never play another down with the team. We're here to support him.

"If it's family issues, personal issues, whatever he's dealing with, I'm supportive". The designation would keep him out of game action for at least eight weeks, and the Redskins would have to pay Cravens his full 2017 salary, plus another 25 percent of his signing bonus (which would be a steep price for someone who still could retire before playing in another game). He was expected to be back in time for the start of the regular season but now that will not happen. After failed attempts by the coaching staff to reach him, several teammates reached out to Cravens, who informed them that he was contemplating retirement.

Cravens must sit out for a month, at which point the Redskins will have to make a decision about his status.? In March, he lashed out on social media when Sports Illustrated reported that Cravens blew off medical treatment late in the season and drew a stern phone call from then-GM Scot McCloughan.
