Trump brands North Korea 'rougue nation' following H bomb test

Seoul yesterday simulated an attack on Kim Jong-un’s main nuclear test site

North Korea on Sunday conducted its sixth nuclear test, claiming that it was now capable of producing intercontinental ballistic missiles fitted with thermonuclear warheads.

The US Geological Survey said it detected a 5.6 magnitude quake near the rogue state's known nuclear test site, the Washington Post reported.

USA monitors measured a 6.3-magnitude "explosion" near the North's main testing site at Punggye-ri.

It claimed the device could be mounted on its newly developed intercontinental ballistic missiles, which experts have said are capable of reaching the United States mainland.

"We are starting National Security Council now to collect information and analyze this", said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

It came hours after Pyongyang said it had miniaturised a hydrogen bomb for use on a long-range missile, and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was pictured with what state media said was a new type of hydrogen bomb.

In a statement Sunday, the ministry urged "immediate dialogue and negotiations".

Hydrogen bombs are many times more powerful than an atomic bomb.

Those readings would put the size of the explosion at several times larger than previous North Korean tests.

The North followed its two tests of Hwasong-14 ICBMs by threatening in August to launch a salvo of its Hwasong-12 intermediate range missiles toward the US Pacific island territory of Guam.

In its report, KCNA (via Xinhua, China's official news agency) also said the North Korean leader "guided the work for nuclear weaponization on the spot", as part of "the final-stage research and development for perfecting the state nuclear force".

South Koreans watch a TV broadcast about North Korea's sixth nuclear test at Seoul Station on Sunday. North Korea wants to demonstrate it knows what makes a credible nuclear warhead.

What does the test tell us?

North Korea is thought to have a growing arsenal of nuclear bombs and has spent decades trying to ideal a multistage, long-range missile to eventually carry smaller versions of those bombs. -South Korea security alliance.

In the 12 days since Washington praised Pyongyang's "restraint" and held out the prospect of early talks, the North has fired three short-range missiles, sent another one soaring over Japan and detonated what appears to be a full-fledged thermonuclear device.

While Moon's approach to North Korea hardens, talk of bringing US' tactical nuclear weapons back into South Korea has reemerged, which has always been championed by the conservatives. The tremor is only 10km deep, the USGS said on Sunday.

"I sincerely hope that this will serve as the final wake-up call to the global community to outlaw all nuclear testing by bringing the CTBT into force", said Lassina Zerbo, head of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organisation.

An announcement from KCNA, Pyongyang's state news agency, said the H-bomb, created to be the payload of an ICBM, was "true to the Workers' Party of Korea's plan for building a strategic nuclear force". About 28,500 American troops are deployed in South Korea as deterrence against North Korea.
