Bomb technicians had been scheduled to begin work shortly after noon (1000 GMT), but the fire department said there were delays as some people refused to leave.

Hospital patients and the elderly are among those affected in what will be Germany's biggest evacuation in recent history.

More than 60,000 people have been ordered to leave a radius of 1.5 kilometers (nearly a mile) around the site where the 1.8-ton British bomb will be disposed of Sunday.

Officials have moved quickly to safely dispose of the bomb, amid concerns that an uncontrolled explosion would destroy an entire block of buildings.

A steady flow of people filed into a temporary shelter at Frankfurt's trade fair site, with bananas and beverages on offer. If that fails they will try to cut the fuses away with a water jet.

Rain from Harvey to hit MA this weekend
Although clouds are predicted for Saturday, forecasters said Sunday and Monday are projected to be sunny and warm. Harvey , now a tropical storm, made a second USA landfall this morning, just west of Cameron, Louisiana.

In July, a kindergarten was evacuated after teachers discovered an unexploded World War Two bomb on a shelf among some toys.

Some 2,000 tonnes of undetonated explosives continue to be located every year in Germany, more than 70 years after the end of World War II.

About 150,000 unexploded bombs dropped by British and American planes are believed to by lying across Germany.

They were dropped by the RAF and US Air Force during the war.

Some of the city's museums have offered free entry to displaced residents.

Officials have been using heat-detecting cameras to monitor the evacuation zone.
