Korea Warns Japan of 'Imminent Self-Destruction'

Minister Theresa May leaves Downing Street in London

North Korea hates such displays of US military might at close range and will likely respond with fury.

Two B-1B "Lancer" bombers from Guam and four F-35B stealth jet fighters from the Marine Corps' Iwakuni airbase in Japan conducted the drill, with four South Korean jet fighters also taking part. The government then said the next target would be the US territory of Guam, home to Andersen AFB, where Ellsworth has deployed several B-1B bombers and hundreds of airmen.

North Korea, which claims Washington has long threatened it by flaunting the powerful USA nuclear arsenal, describes the long-range B-1Bs as "nuclear strategic bombers" although the United States no longer arms them with nuclear weapons.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has made it clear that he is ready to negotiate with North Korea, provided they are ready for nuclear disarmament.

Pyongyang's testing of nuclear and ballistic missile technology is banned by the United Nations and is the subject of multiple global sanctions.

"Talks are not the solution", US President Donald Trump said on Twitter today, quoted by world agencies.

The UN Security Council has unanimously condemned North Korea for its military actions.

South Korea will soon get F-35As, the Air Force's version of the jet meant to take off from runways, and Japan will load its fearsome Izumo-class aircraft carriers with F-35Bs. "This complex mission clearly demonstrates our solidarity with our allies and underscores the broadening cooperation to defend against this common regional threat".

Wang reiterated China's position of placing importance on dialogue with North Korea, the ministry said.

The bombing exercise came as the United States and South Korea wrapped up their annual Ulchi Freedom Guardian joint military drills that involved tens of thousands of soldiers.

And while North Korea's nuclear threat grows, the U.S. is preparing a new block of software that will enable the F-35 to carry tactical nuclear weapons, matching the secrecy and potency of any offensive capability North Korea could dream of. Washington and Seoul faced calls to postpone or downsize this year's drills.

North Korea on Tuesday flew a potentially-nuclear capable intermediate range ballistic missile over northern Japan.

The planned joint US and South Korean response has been named OPLAN 5015. -South Korea war games and called for his military to conduct more ballistic missile launches targeting the Pacific Ocean.

"There's a possibility of strategic provocations, including additional ballistic missile launches and a sixth nuclear test", the ministry said.

On Wednesday Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov urged Washington not to use force against North Korea.

Before Tuesday's launch, it appeared North Korea was backing away from its threat to fire missiles toward Guam. It also flight-tested a pair of developmental ICBMs in July.

On Tuesday, Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile over Japan's northern Hokkaido island, triggering public alerts to take cover before landing in the sea.

It must provide convincing "extended" nuclear deterrence to cover South Korea and Japan, and may well have to decide to either reintroduce modern U.S. theater nuclear weapons, or smaller nuclear weapons created to be effective at battlefield targets, to South Korea, or accept a South Korean nuclear force.
