Hurricane Harvey price gouging: Houston gas station charges $20 per gallon

Price-gouging widespread in Hurricane Harvey's wake

So while Best Buy contends that it was all an honest mistake, they have a legal responsibility not to price gouge during a disaster. On Monday, that already-high price for gas was bested by a Houston convenience store that, according to the AG's office, was selling fuel at $20 per gallon.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott also spoke out against price gouging, calling it "un-Texan".

Legal penalties run to as much as $20,000 per occurrence, or up to $250,000 if the victim is 65 or older.

The attorney general's office warned consumers to "be on your guard" in a statement on its website.

"I do think people should know that in Texas most people are not price gouging, most businesses are not price gouging, and for that matter, we've had a lot more volunteers saving people's lives than we've had people ripping people off", Paxton said.

"We have received complaints from consumers as well as some of our employees and investigators in the area concerning price-gouging happening with hotels, grocers, fuel providers and (most frequently) fresh water", the spokesperson said.

Who could the next CEO of Uber be? The back-and-forth has also featured interjections from people loyal to Mr. At Expedia, Khosrowshahi has been an outspoken chief executive, since 2005.

Attorney General Bill Schuette issued a warning to gas stations Wednesday that his office will be looking for any evidence of price gouging. One business sold bottles of water for a staggering $99 per case - more than 10 times some of the prices seen online.

"Not as an excuse but as an explanation, we don't typically sell cases of water".

A leading electronics chain has been accused of "price gouging" after one of its shops in Texas was caught selling cases of bottled water for over $42 (£32) as Hurricane Harvey raged in nearby Houston.

But Best Buy was recently singled out on social media when a tweet showed that individual bottles were being sold at a Houston location for $29 while cases of water were $42.

'We are deeply offended and saddened by the actions taken by this hotel.
