Ending the company's contentious search, Khosrowshahi was chosen by the board of directors at Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL] following the board meetings over the weekend, according to two sources having the knowledge of the decision, reports said. All of the problems caused co-founder and former CEO Travis Kalanick to step down from the leadership post in June, leaving the job vacant.
Immelt's surprise announcement is the latest drama in a months-long saga that began when major investors ousted then-Uber CEO Travis Kalanick in June.
Immelt didn't say what prompted the withdrawal, but it's an unusually open declaration given that Uber hadn't publicly discussed that he was in the running.
Since then, Uber launched an internal investigation led by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, whose extensive recommendations included a board overhaul (which is weighted heavily toward Uber's founders) and in-depth review of the company's human resources practices.
Uber declined to comment.
Kalanick's exit came after months of turmoil that made Uber a prime example of a start-up culture gone wrong. Meg Whitman, chief executive of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, had also been a leading candidate, according to sources close to the process.
Khosrowshahi has been CEO of Expedia since August of 2015.
Khosrowshahi took the helm of Expedia when it spun out of InterActiveCorp's IAC Travel division in 2005.
Uber had previously said it hoped to name the new CEO by September. During his 16-year tenure at GE, in which Immelt reshaped the company by divesting its financial services arm, the company's stock price dropped considerably.
Last week, Uber said its sales reached $1.75 billion in the second quarter, up 17% from the previous quarter. In the absence of top leadership, Uber has been run by a 13-person committee.
The legal request follows another letter sent Thursday to Uber and Garret Camp, who is chairman of the app-based taxi company's board, in which Pishevar accused Benchmark of violating its fiduciary duty as a significant investor in Uber. The investors at Benchmark are anxious that Immelt might be too eager to please Kalanick and would give the ousted CEO too much power. CEO Meg Whitman gained support from some board members after presenting her vision for the company on Saturday, despite repeated public denials that she would take the job, but she ultimately lost out.
Their most obvious rivals in the top half of the draw are Austria's Dominic Thiem and the mercurial Nick Krygios of Australia. I had hoped there would be a chance this season, but now that the draw is out, the best they can do is the semifinals.
