Video Emerges of Man Firing Shot Near Protester at Charlottesville Rally

Video Shows Police Standing Back After Man Shoots At Charlottesville Crowd

Preston remains in custody at the Baltimore County Detention Center. Charlottesville police said in a news release Saturday that Preston fired the gun August 12 in the 100 block of West Market Street, which is a corner of Emancipation Park, where the rally was held.

A man who is suspected of firing a gun at counter-protesters during the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month has been arrested, police said Saturday.

In the video below, in the words of the Times article, "a white nationalist protester in a bulletproof vest turned, pointed a pistol toward the crowd and fired a single shot at the ground, in the direction of a black man wielding an improvised torch".

But the ACLU video shows more than a lack of preparedness, according to counter-protesters at the event. He can be heard shouting "Hey, nigger" at Long before he aims the gun and fires it.

Captured on a video by the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, the footage was turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on August 17 and to the Virginia State Police and the Charlottesville Police Department on August 20.

It wasn't just anti-fascists who criticised law enforcement.

Police said Saturday that they have now identified 35 victims of the vehicle attack.

Lanka elect to bat in do-or-die game
For Sri Lanka , spinner Akila Dananjaya scalped two wickets while pacers Lasith Malinga and Vishwa Fernando took one wicket each. If the Men in Blue are able to clinch the series today, this will be their fourth ODI series in a row in Sri Lanka .

A spokesperson for the police claimed that officers couldn't hear the shot over the crowd noise, but Rosia Parker, a community activist at the rally, told the Times, "We all heard it and ran - I know damn well they heard it".

Officials have insisted that no "stand down" order was issued, and a state police spokeswoman said troopers did not hear the shot. "Had any one of our troopers witnessed that incident, they would have immediately acted, just as they did for the other four arrests made during the weekend".

Attempts by CNN to identify an attorney representing Preston were unsuccessful Sunday.

One person died at the August 12 rally.

According to the New York Times, Richard W. Preston was charged with discharging a firearm within 1,000ft of a school - which could land him 10 years in prison.

A woman was killed when a auto plowed into protesters, and two state troopers died when their helicopter crashed.

In addition to Preston's arrest, Daniel Patrick Borden, 18, has been charged with malicious wounding related to an aggravated assault that day near the Market Street Parking Garage.
