Tillerson On Trump's C'Ville Response: 'The President Speaks For Himself'

MAY 28 2014 FILE

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson defended American values on Sunday after a United Nations panel criticised the official response to racist violence - but conspicuously declined to speak for President Donald Trump. He affirmed that the State Department represents U.S. citizens, the values of the country, commitment to freedom, and the equal treatment of every person in the world.

One person died and many more were injured when a suspect who demonstrated with white nationalists at a so-called Unite the Right rally rammed his vehicle into crowd of counter-protesters.

"I don't think that anyone will doubt the values of the american people or of the determination of the us government" to "defend these values", he said during the television program Fox News Sunday.

WALLACE: And the president's values?

But Tillerson changed his tune when he was asked about Trump's values and the president's reaction to Charlottesville following his repeated decision to blame "both sides" for the violence and equate white supremacists with leftist protesters. "We have an American president who has emboldened white supremacists with messages of comfort and support".

Bledisloe heartbreak for gallant Wallabies
Australia would have been 24-7 up after half an hour had Foley not missed two conversion attempts and a penalty. Read said the All Blacks had stayed calm and struck at the right moment. "We had to dig deep". "I'm not angry.

During an appearance on Fox News Sunday, Tillerson stated that Trump speaks for himself on his values. The Secretary of State responded that he does not believe anyone doubts American values, the commitment of the USA government to advancing and defending those values.

"I don't know that we're wrong", Tillerson said. When Chris asked him whether he was distancing himself from Trump's comments, Tillerson replied that he had made his remarks as to American values, and the need to uphold them. "And those who embrace it poison our public discourse and they damage the very country that they claim to love".

In front of the students, the secretary of State had, on August 18, strongly "condemned the racism and bigotry in all their forms ".

Tillerson is rumoured to be considering an early exit from the administration, though the state department has denied reports of his potential departure. Racism is evil; it is antithetical to America's values. Gary Cohn, the president's chief economic adviser, said in a Financial Times interview published last week that the administration "can and must do better" condemning hate groups.
