Christopher Columbus statue in NYC could be considered for removal

Bill de Blasio Orders Review of All NYC Monuments Considering Removal of Christopher Columbus by Ben Kew22 Aug 20170 22 Aug 2017 22 Aug 2017

The NYPD Columbia Association, which has as members thousands of Italian American police officers, has argued the statue should not be removed.

While de Blasio demurred when asked during a mayoral debate Wednesday whether the Columbus statue would be spared, spokeswoman Natalie Grybauskas said Friday, "There are no plans to remove the Columbus statue".

New York City Mayor Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced a 90-day review by a commission of all "symbols of hate" on city property in the wake of violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that was protesting the planned removal of a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

De Blasio, who is also part Italian, has previously marched in New York City's Columbus Day parade.

"It's Columbus today and who knows who will be on this secret list tomorrow", Staten Island Councilman Joe Borelli told CBS on Thursday.

Democratic City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito echoed the mayor's stance, saying the memorial celebrates a disputable historical figure. "As I said, Christopher Columbus is a controversial figure to many of us particularly in the Caribbean and I think that that has to be looked at, when you have to look at history we have to look at it thoroughly and clearly". "We have to create a box where we gauge everyone and say what are the redemptive things that you've done, and do they outweigh some of the craziness that you have?"

Columbus has been hailed in American-lore as discovering the new world on his expedition in 1492 on behalf on the Spanish empire. He discovered our land and generations of Italian-Americans helped build NY.

"Italians are everywhere in this state", State Sen.

"Twenty-seven million Italian Americans-strong, to this day, we still hold him in a place of honor", added Assemblyman Ron Castorina.

While he is one of the first Europeans to reach the Americas, critics of the explorer cite his cruel treatment of native peoples as well as his role in the slave trade.

The congressman wants to bring the Columbus statue to Great Kills because it's federal land and de Blasio has zero jurisdiction.

While Columbus - who has an American holiday named after him - was an ambitious pioneer, he was also known for his violent tactics used to colonize and oppress Native Americans.

"What it suggests is the memory of the Italian-Americans that contributed to building this city, the very buildings that we engage in commerce in, that government sits in", the assemblyman said.
