Amid the growing controversy around a series of rain mishaps within a week, Air India chief Ashwani Lohani on Wednesday has been appointed as the new Chairman of Railway Board, following the resignation on AK Mittal.

The announcement by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet came hours after Railway minister Suresh Prabhu indicated that he had offered his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is an officer with the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME). His resignation was accepted by the Ministry, told a spokesperson. In 1980, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi signed an order to sack the entire Railway Board for non-performance. Early Wednesday morning, Kaifiyat express derailed near Auraiya injuring over 70 people.

According to data from the Ministry of Railways, the country saw 104 train accidents between 2016-2017.

Lohani hs earlier served as Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Delhi Division; Director, National Rail Museum; and Chief Administrative Officer, Rail Alternate Fuel. Lohani now is the Chairman & Managing Director of Air India. He even took full responsibility for the recent train accidents. He successfully piloted the nomination of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Big Ben Bonged Throughout The Blitz - So, Why Is It Silent Now?
MPs who approved the £29m renovation project claim they weren't informed that Big Ben would be out of action for so long. The last bong before the refurbishment will be at midday (6pm Thai time) on Monday (Aug 21), the statement said.

A qualified mechanical engineer, who also has degrees in electrical, metallurgical and electronics and telecommunication streams, Lohani is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.

Expectations are high as Ashwani Lohani, known for the turnaround in Madhya Pradesh tourism corporation, takes over as Chairman Railway Board on Thursday. It was because of his initiatives that the Fairy Queen, the world's oldest steam engine, was run on Indian tracks, setting the Guinness world record in 1998. Officials say under Mr Lohani, the struggling airline posted an operational profit of Rs 500 crore past year and improved its performance.

Sources also said the PM had a meeting with Prabhu and senior rail officials yesterday afternoon, when he made it clear that seniors would be held responsible for such lapses.
