A female bomber reportedly detonated explosives strapped to her body, killing herself and 27 others.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blasts.

But this year has seen a surge in attacks, including an audacious assault on an oil exploration team that killed 69 people in Borno in July, raising fears that Boko Haram is regaining strength.

It launched an insurgency in 2009 that has killed about 20,000 people and displaced around 2.6 million others, creating one of the world's biggest humanitarian crises.

Military authorities in the state have yet to confirm the attacks.

Most of its residents are Muslims but there is a considerable number of Christians. Their goal was to free members of Boko Haram held in prison.

The group has, however, resorted to sporadic shooting attacks and bombings in the northeast of the African country, spreading panic among local residents. A video released later by the group warned of more attacks if journalists report unfairly on the group's activities.

While the Nigerian Air Force are of the opinion that the sect has been dealt with substantially, the military and Borno state governor agree that the fight is far from over.
