Feared Dead As Landslide Sweeps Away 2 Buses In Himachal Pradesh

Two buses carrying dozens of passengers had stopped for a tea break at a rest stop when the landslide struck.

With the road blocked by landslides in several places, soldiers used shovels and pickaxes to remove rocks, boulders and debris covering the buses and pull out the bodies. "One of the buses is buried under almost 15 metres (50 feet) of mud".

Around 250 meters of the stretch of the road has been entirely washed away by the landslide.

Confirming the development, Himachal Pradesh Transport Minister G S Bali said that around 50 people are feared to have been away in the incident. The injured persons were taken to a hospital.

Rescue operations were halted Sunday night with authorities anxious about more mudslides on the Mandi-Pathankot highway, where the tradegy occured on the intervening night between Saturday and Sunday.

Army and NDRF teams rushed to the rescue, with more than 100 Army personnel of 9 Grenadier reaching the site from Palampur.

The CM announced an immediate relief of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of deceased.

The Chief Minister said the topographical condition of the State was such that such incidents could not be averted but the Government would provide whatever possible help to the family members of deceased.

"I pray for the quick recovery of those injured in Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh".
