In September 2016, he had celebrated his Bar Mitzvah, one of the most important ceremonies in judaism, of which he had been deprived of a century earlier.

The world's oldest man died Friday at age 113, a month before his 114th birthday.

A devout Orthodox Jew, Kristal wrapped phylacteries - leather-wrapped cubes containing Torah scriptures and worn during prayer - daily for the last 100 years, the Times reported.

The original celebration had not taken place because World War One broke out.

During World War I, Kristal was separated from his parents, according to a post from the Guinness Book of World Records.

After growing up in Poland, Kristal worked in the family confectionary business until Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939. He had moved with his family in the ghetto of the city.

Kristal survived the Holocaust, but his first wife and two children were killed. When he was found by Soviet liberating forces, he weighed just 37 kilograms (81 pounds). "They had to think about a profession and about making a living".

Marco Frigatti, Head of Records for Guinness World Records, presents Yisrael Kristal a certificate for being the oldest living man a year ago.

When he received the the Guinness World Record certificate, Yisrael admitted he didn't know the "secret for long life" and instead believed everything was "determined from above".

After surviving the war he moved to Israel where he lived for over six decades and remarried. Shula Kupershtuch says: "He always saw only light and good in everything".
