Kenya elections: President Uhuru Kenyatta wins second term

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the victor Friday of a disputed election with 54.27 (8,203,290) percent of votes, beating his rival Raila Odinga who scored 44.74 percent, the election commission announced.

"What the IEBC has posted as results of the Presidential Elections is a complete fraud based on a multiplier that fraudulently gave Uhuru Kenyatta votes that were not cast", he said in a series of tweets.

Kenyan law states that electronic reporting must be double-checked and verified by physical paper forms signed by polling station officials before Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, or IEBC, can declare a victor.

Global observers on Thursday praised the handling of the election, with the European Union mission saying it had seen no sign of manipulation despite opposition complaints and scattered protests.

"I reach out to you, I reach out to all your supporters", Kenyatta said in comments directed to opposition leader Raila Odinga. Many Kenyans fear a repeat of violence that followed the 2007 election.

"As for now, I can not say whether the election has been hacked".

As Kenyatta held a strong lead in provisional results with 96 percent of all polling stations counted, the election commission defended the voting system as secure, saying there were "no interferences before, during and after" Tuesday's election.

"We shall work and partner together so we can build Kenya", Uhuru said.

As a longstanding friend of Kenya, the United States applauds the millions of Kenyans who on August 8 peacefully exercised their fundamental democratic right to choose their leaders.

Kenyatta, son of the country's founding father who in 2013 became Kenya's youngest president, was seeking a second and final five-year term. "The chairman told us ... they will respond to us after the event", said Mudavadi.

Another attractive addition was that about five million young Kenyans voted for the first time, and added a new dimension to politics in the country.

Odinga and the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) have said they would only accept the results if allowed to access the election commission's servers to audit raw data from the country's 41,000 polling stations. Kenyatta, 55, whose father was Kenya's first president after independence from British colonial rule, has not commented on Odinga's claims. By the evening, after multiple delays, the country's elections commission still had not made any announcements. He has not indicated how he will mount any challenge to the results in this election.

Orengo said they would not seek redress through legal channels again, saying they had tried once and failed.

Hundreds of police in anti-riot gear are patrolling the capital, Nairobi.

Many Kenyans have left Nairobi in recent days, bracing for violence.

On Friday morning, in anticipation of the official results being announced, Odinga's supporters staged protest marches in some areas, including burning tires in some of Nairobi's largest slums. One person was killed by a machete-wielding gang that attacked a tally center in coastal Tana River county, and police shot dead two of the assailants.
