Japan commemorates the 72nd anniversary of the atomic bombing on Hiroshima

An allied correspondent stands in the rubble in front of the shell of a building that once was a movie theater in Hiroshima Japan a month after the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare was dropped by the U.S. on Aug. 6 1945

No sitting United States president had ever visited this city, destroyed by an atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, in one of the final moves of World War II.

The "hell" seen in Hiroshima after the atomic bombing could occur again at any time as long as nuclear weapons continue to exist.

"For us to truly realize a world without nuclear weapons, the participation of both nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states is necessary", he said.

On a positive note, he highlighted a major development in 2017, in particular the adoption last month of the treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons by UN Member States. But Japan, along with the nine nuclear-armed nations, including the United States, refused to take part in the negotiations and the vote.

Three days later, another atomic bombing in Nagasaki killed more than 70,000 people.

The treaty's preamble uses the term hibakusha in its mention of "the unacceptable suffering" experienced by the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which had killed an estimated 214,000 people by the end of 1945.

Woman who convinced boyfriend to kill himself faces sentencing
Carter was charged as a youthful offender, which gives the judge some latitude in her punishment. He can commit her to a Department of Youth Services facility until she turns 21 on August 11.

Last year, then-President Obama became the first USA president to visit Hiroshima, where he called for an end to nuclear weapons.

Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic attacks.

Amid the Global bodies' continuous effort to curb nuclear arms and hence limit the possibility of nuclear warfare, North Korea have been making efforts to acquire nuclear weapons and have indulged in test-firing of intercontinental ballistic missiles recently.

Nuclear weapons are useless for national security, and possessing them does nothing more than endanger humanity.

"Yet our dream of a world free of nuclear weapons remains far from a reality", he said.
