US Marine aircraft reportedly crashes off Australian coast, search and rescue underway

MV-22 Osprey

The US Marine Corps said on Saturday an active search and rescue operation was underway for servicemembers involved in an aviation "mishap" off the east coast of Australia.

The recent joint military exercise took place largely in Shoalwater Bay and involved more than 30,000 U.S. and Australian personnel, according to Australian Defense Department.

According to MSN, the U.S Marine Corps said that the incident was under investigation but would give no further comment.

The accident could mark the first fatal MV-22 crash since May 2015, when two crew members died after the tiltrotor's engine ingested too much dust and lost thrust in a hover over Bellows Field, Hawaii.

Twenty-three other people aboard the MV-22 Osprey have been rescued.

"I have briefed Prime Minister (Malcolm) Turnbull and spoken with Secretary Mattis this evening to offer Australia's support in any way that can be of assistance".

Australian authorities said no Australian personnel were on board.

Rahul Gandhi visits flood affected villages in Rajasthan

"It shows we are capable of interacting with our coalition partners, particularly the United States".

It is unclear what caused the aircraft to crash.

The Osprey is a tilt-rotor aircraft that can lift off without a runway, like a helicopter, and cruise like an airplane while in flight.

Australian media reported the incident happened during an attempt to land on an aircraft carrier.

The US marines have been involved in Talisman Sabre joint exercises with Australian forces, which involves more than 30,000 servicemen and women. Its five crew members were rescued safely.

In January this year, an MV-22 had a "hard landing" during a raid in Yemen, injuring three soldiers on board.
