Thousand Flee Wildfires As California Clashes With Federal Government Over Firefighting Debt

A growing wildfire in the U.S. state of California has forced thousands of residents of the small town of Mariposa to evacuate. Cal Fire says 300 structures remain threatened. The fire has grown to 45, 724 acres and is only 7 percent contained.

More than 1,400 fire personnel from multiple agencies were dispatched to fight the "extreme and aggressive fire" via air and ground but the battle was complicated by severe temperatures and humidity, fire officials said.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says that the fire almost doubled in size overnight and has now scorched roughly 71 square miles (183 square kilometers).

So far nearly a dozen homes have been destroyed, but hundreds in the area are still threatened.

No one has been reported injured.

The fire has forced more than 4,000 people from their homes, officials said.

The town's 2,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate because of the blaze known as the Detwiler Fire, and Gov.

Merced County deputies are assisting with the evacuation of Mariposa residents.

Fire officials said power lines located south of the fire, which supply power to the national park, were in danger of being burned.

Californian Governor Jerry Brown issued a state of emergency in Mariposa County Tuesday as a wildfire continues to grow.

Investigations and further details on the fire are still underway.
