Why critically-ill British baby can not be moved to Vatican

Donald Trump to grill Theresa May over Charlie Gard in one-on-one meeting

A Vatican-owned hospital has offered to continue treatment of a terminally-ill baby who is scheduled to be removed from life support within a week.

The baby's parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, made an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to overturn the ruling and allow them to take the baby to the US for an experimental treatment, but it refused to intervene.

Charlie Gard is a 10-month old suffering a rare, terminal, genetic illness. The boy has trouble with basic life functions with his life itself being maintained by a ventilator in a British hospital.

The Pope had earlier said he was praying for Charlie's parents and was following the situation "with affection and commotion".

In the United Kingdom doctors have the final say on the treatment of a patient and if they feel it is in their best interests while in Italy the family of the patient have the final say. Charlie's situation resulted in a worldwide debate over his fate.

"But I know no doctor wants to be in the bad position where they have to make such heartbreaking decisions".

London hospital refused a transfer request from Bambino Gesu hospital in Rome for legal reasons.

British Prime Minister Theresa May supports the court ruling, stating her support for the opinions of the doctors at Great Ormond Street, where Gard is being held, who say it's time to remove his life-support and allow him to die.

India ready for Sri Lanka
Dilani Manodara and Shashikala Siriwardene looked to be on their way of forming a partnership as strong as Raj and Sharma. Barring Chamari Atapattu, their batters have failed to impress, and bowlers lack bite in the Sri Lankan attack.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson spoke to Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano today over Charlie's treatment - and also gave his backing to doctors.

Mrs May said: "I'm sure the thoughts of all Members of the House are with the family and Charlie at this exceptionally hard time".

Charlie's continuous struggle for life and his parents' desperate plight took the internet by storm, and several people voiced their support for the baby.

This is an undated hand out photo of Charlie Gard provided by his family, at Great Ormond Street Hospital, in London.

The parents of Charlie Gard, who suffers from brain damage, have been fighting to take him to the United States for an experimental treatment for his extremely rare form of mitochondrial disease, but lost their case in British courts and the European Court of Human Rights.

He said: "I've seen Charlie constantly, I've seen him every week since he was born, I've been there by the bedside and it's an very bad situation to be in".

U.S. President Donald Trump has also expressed his intention to help the family, and White House officials have reportedly spoken with the family to offer support. And that battle officially ended this past week when the highest court in Europe, the European Court of Human Rights, decided in favor of the hospital.

It came as criticism mounted of President Trump and the Vatican for "prolonging the agony" of the infant and his parents after offering to intervene.
