Nadal Wins 10th French Open, Makes Tennis History

9-time champ Nadal faces Wawrinka in French Open men's final

Nothing could extinguish Nadal's fire though and he surged two breaks ahead in the third set despite the best efforts of Wawrinka to try and extend the contest.

"This has been, I think, a flawless Roland Garros for me", said Nadal, who dropped just 35 games in total on his way to a 15th grand slam title but his first for three years.

As well as bringing the Spaniard "La Decima" - his 10th triumph in Paris - it was also Nadal's 15th grand slam overall, putting him outright second on the all-time list behind rival Roger Federer, who has 18.

After consecutive holds to start at Roland Garros, Wawrinka brought up the first break point opportunity with a couple of overarm smashes after some fine defensive hitting from Nadal. Nadal said when he first won the title in 2005 he would not have imagined he would still be playing in 2017, let alone winning, and said 10 titles had a special ring to it.

Afterward, Nadal said about Djokovic: "He deserves to win this tournament". For me the nerves, the adrenaline I feel when I play on this court is impossible to compare to another feeling. I just won the most important event of the year for me, so that's the only thing that matters today.

Nadal was joined on the presentation by his uncle Toni, his coach since boyhood, who is stepping down at the end of the year. "It's true that 10 is a lovely number, but actually my favorite is nine", Nadal said before facing Wawrinka, the 2015 French Open victor.

Well, he sure proved to be precisely that Sunday, when the conditions were exactly to the liking of a guy who grew up on the island of Mallorca.

The sun is shining, there is barely a trace of cloud in the sky and the temperature is about 85 degrees (30 Celsius) as Sunday's title match approaches.

Nadal, who had taken the first set 6-2, broke early in the second and stretched his winning run of games to seven before Wawrinka managed to get on the board again. His shots didn't have their usual verve, his legs their usual spring.

It was not, however, in the cards Sunday for Wawrinka.

In response, Wawrinka smashed his racket over his knees and received a warning for racket abuse.

Nadal has that way of wearing down opponents. On this day, he was terrific. Relentless as ever, he made only 12 unforced errors and held all 12 of his service games. But then Nadal kept going. Wawrinka is the 2015 Roland Garros champion.

15 - Nadal is now on his own in second place for the most grand slam singles titles won by a man. But his game? Somehow, better.

In the first set, Nadal won on 82 percent of his first serves and 67 percent of his second serves. "The last couple of years have been awesome for you". He joins Sampras and Ken Rosewall as the only players to win Grand Slam titles in their teens, 20s and 30s.

One area of significant improvement for Nadal over the years is his serve.

Nadal saved all eight break points he faced. Wawrinka would never see another break chance.

Even Wawrinka applauded that one.

"Rafa, I have nothing to say-you were too good", said third seed Wawrinka.
