49% of voters disapprove of GOP healthcare bill

John Thune, R-S.D., and Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, meets with reporters following a closed-door strategy sess.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says Republicans are getting ready for votes on legislation scuttling former President Barack Obama's health care law.

Led by Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, Democrats highlighted President Trump's description of the Republican House-passed version as "mean". They indicated that the legislation would also be available to the public Thursday morning, though it's unclear exactly how it is being released.

The CBO analysis of the House-passed bill concluded it would deprive 23 million people health insurance they would otherwise maintain if Obamacare stayed in place through the coming decade.

In December 2009, after the Affordable Care Act had undergone more than a year of Senate hearings and open debate, some provisions were hashed out in private just before the Senate vote.

McConnell did not indicate he had the majority votes yet for passage.

The only problem? It offers absolutely no details on how Republicans plan to repeal and replace ObamaCare.

U.S. Senate Republicans are planning to unveil their draft of a new healthcare bill on Thursday, June 22, amid conflicts among members of the Senate over the future of the government's Medicaid program as well as the lowering of insurance costs. "It will be different and take a different approach based upon these endless discussions we've had with the only people interested in changing the law, which is Republican senators", McConnell said.

White House discussing moving Spicer to senior communications role
Spicer held another off-camera briefing today, but this time audio was not recorded. Former communications director Michael Dubke resigned last month.

The situation is prime for ridicule from Democrats, who Republicans previously accused of "rushing" Obamacare through Congress. Democrats in the House have already leapt on several of their Republican colleagues for admitting they didn't fully read the bill before the 4 May vote. "It's going to be important to get the president's support to get us across the finish line". The bill will be brought to the Senate floor once the CBO has assessed its cost and impact, "likely next week", McConnell said.

"We want to follow the House model there, that federal money should not be used to pay for abortions, period", Barrasso told CNN.

"We've been discussing all the elements of this endlessly for seven years".

Aides and lobbyists said the bill would impose spending limits on the growth of the federal-state Medicaid program for the poor that would tighten further by the mid-2020s.

The House waiver allowing higher premiums for some people with pre-existing serious illnesses was added shortly before that chamber approved its bill last month and helped attract conservative support.

Besides Lee, two other conservatives were also complaining. "If you get it done, you own the entire system of American medicine", Krauthammer said.

"Everything I hear sounds like Obamacare-lite", Paul said.
