US says it shot down Iranian-made drone in Syria

Marine General Joseph Dunford said there were still communications between a United States air operations centre in Qatar and Russian forces on the ground in Syria, adding: "We'll work diplomatically and military in the coming hours to re-establish deconfliction".

The US military said the Syrian jet had dropped bombs near rebel Syrian Democratic Force (SDF) fighters on Sunday.

That is where US forces have been training and advising local Syrian Arabs for the fight against Islamic State militants.

"When the armed UAV continued to advance on the Coalition position without diverting its course it was shot down", the coalition said. Russia's defense ministry warned it will start tracking coalition aircraft west of the Euphrates River, calling the shootdown a "cynical violation" of Syria's sovereignty.

Australia on Tuesday suspended its airstrikes against IS targets in Syria as a precaution, after Russian Federation announced it was suspending the hotline and warned the USA -led coalition not to fly over Syrian army positions west of the Euphrates River.

"We call on Russian Federation to continue to use these measures". "We remain available on our end".

In Tuesday's incident, the US-led coalition said an F-15E Strike Eagle jet destroyed an armed Shahed-129 drone in the early hours of the morning as it neared the Al-Tanaf base along Syria's eastern border.

Russian Federation threatened to scrap the hotline after an April 7 U.S. cruise missile strike on a Syrian regime airbase in retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of civilians.

The jihadists are under major pressure in Syria and neighbouring Iraq.

That incident followed two others involving U.S. fire against pro-regime forces on the ground as they came close to the garrison.

A US F-15E fighter jet shot down a pro-Syrian regime drone near At Tanf, Syria, on Monday, two United States officials told CNN, the third downing of a pro-regime aircraft this month.

UK's Hammond says economy should be priority in Brexit talks
And Hammond described the divorce bill figures being bandied around in Brussels as "the most egregious pre-negotiation posturing". Brussels has been insistent that a new trade deal can not be discussed until after Britain has left the existing one.

Almost all of those confrontations have happened in cities now or recently under ISIS control.

A Syrian military official in Damascus said the truce was not extended.

The push by Syrian government forces in the Daraa area appears headed for the Jordanian border, two weeks after Assad's troops reached the border with Iraq for the first time in years.

The Syrian pilot reportedly ejected before the crash.

Both the United States and Russian Federation contend their forces are in Syria to fight ISIS. "If the regime continues attacking our positions in Raqqa province, we will be forced to retaliate", SDF spokesman Talal Silo said. The military, for its part, is saying that it is willing to do whatever the civilian chain of command asks of it - if it ever does lay out a strategy.

Meanwhile, in northern Syria, the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa is now under siege by coalition-backed Kurdish forces, who, like most of the militias supported by the USA -led coalition as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, are considered an enemy of the regime. He says it's not clear if there was any communication between the aircraft.

"We're focused on defeating ISIS".

The U.S. also downed a Syrian government warplane earlier this week in northern Syria. The Trump administration also encouraged Syrian rebels to put their weapons down, a resumption of the role the Obama administration played.

But some United States officials acknowledge that the rising tensions reflect, in part, a lack of clarity about the US's long term aims within Syria after the presumed defeat of ISIS.

"We keep saying we are not going to fight the Assad regime. You are not just fighting Bashar al-Assad", Murphy said.

"And we have to understand what we're getting involved in, right". What would happen if Assad's government had the same idea went unaddressed.
