U.S. lawmaker shot by anti-Trump gunman showing improvement

Capitol Police Called Heroes for Taking Down Gunman

The man who shot senior Republican congressman Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice session this week had a list containing the names of three politicians, officials said.

"He will be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks", said Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, who spoke Friday about the Louisiana Republican who remains in critical condition at the hospital in the District.

The family of a lobbyist shot multiple times during a Republican baseball practice outside Washington says he has undergone additional surgery and doctors expect a full recovery.

Scalise has had two surgeries and will require additional operations, Sava said, adding that it's hard to predict how long he will be in the hospital.

Scalise sustained serious injuries as the bullet traveled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.

President Donald Trump says that wounded Congressman Steve Scalise's condition is more hard than people first realized.

Trump added that Scalise is "having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought" following the shooting Wednesday.

"Scalise continues to show signs of improvement".

Also hurt but released from hospitals were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.

The shooting occurred at a popular park and baseball complex in Alexandria, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, where Republican lawmakers and others were gathered for a morning practice about 7 a.m.

64 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump's performance
The incumbent is much better known: 18 percent said either that they had a neutral opinion of Cruz or no opinion at all. Nonetheless, these expectations continued as Trump's presidency has replicated the characteristics of his campaign.

Trump says, "Steve is our friend, he's a patriot and he's a true fighter".

"Both were purchased by the shooter from federal firearms licensees", the Capitol Police said in a statement.

Trump, who visited Scalise at the hospital on Wednesday, said the congressman was "in some trouble but he's going to be okay, we hope".

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was wounded along with four others.

The FBI is still investigating the case and is looking through Hodgkinson's belongings, including his cellphone, computer and camera.

"We will not give in to fear, violence or hate", Aguilar said.

Trump and his wife, Melania, visited with Scalise late Wednesday.

Investigators said in a statement that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has searched the van, which was parked not far from the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field where Wednesday's shooting took place.

Investigators say he shot House Rep. Steve Scalise before he was killed by police who had been guarding the congressman.
