North says Kim supervised test of new anti-ship missile

The North's official Korean Central News Agency said: "This new-type cruise rocket is a powerful attack means capable of striking any enemy group of battleships", adding it can be used "at will".

The latest missile test by North Korea was of "a new-type ground-to-sea cruise rocket", the nuclear-armed country's state media said Friday.

The official added that the South Korean government had assured the US that it would not revert from its previous commitments regarding the missile defense system, and that the United States had given South Korea the same assurances.

On June 8, North Korea launched four missiles from Wonsan, a port city on the east coast of the Korean Peninsula, into the Sea of Japan.

The missiles represent the fourth new missile system North Korea said it has introduced and successfully tested this year, sending a defiant message that it will continue to pursue a weapons program that has rattled its neighbors and Washington.

North Korea has also tested medium-range ballistic missiles that could strike the USA base on Guam.

North Korea unveiled a number of new weapons at a massive military parade on April 15 to mark the anniversary of the birth of the state's founding leader, and has since tested some of them. The drone was found on a mountain near South Korea's eastern border and came equipped with a camera, indicating that the drone may likely have been launched on a espionage mission.

"We assess that North Korea meant to show off its various missile capabilities, display its precise targeting capability, in the form of armed protests against ships in regard to US Navy carrier strike groups and joint naval drills", Roh Jae-cheon, a spokesman for South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staffs told reporters.

Rep. Scalise faces additional surgeries; condition still critical
Scalise was shot Wednesday morning as a gunman sprayed bullets into a Republican congressional baseball practice. His sedation level has been lowered enough to where he has been able to communicate with doctors and his family.

"Our military has strengthened surveillance and alertness readiness in cases of additional provocation by North Korean military and is maintaining all readiness posture while we are tracking and monitoring related situation", the statement read.

The launch came days after USA aircraft carriers USS Carl Vinson and USS Ronald Reagan left those waters after joint exercises with the South Korean navy.

Jong-un's behaviour led to emergency meetings between US President Donald Trump and allies South Korea and Japan, as well as leaving the rest of the world on edge.

It also touted the enhanced technology of the test launch of the new cruise missiles.

The official said USA officials had been "in close contact with our ally South Korea" on the matter.

The type of anti-ship cruise missile that North Korea tested on June 9 is created to fly at a low altitude, making it a potent weapon against ships.

Japan has been at the forefront in seeking further sanctions to rein in the North's nuclear and missile ambitions.
