Kashmir: Bodies of Lashkar commander Junaid Matoo and two militants recovered

In an apparent retaliation to the Arwani encounter, as many as 12 militants ambushed a police party on the outskirts of Anantnag district later on Friday - killing six policemen.

A group of militants attacked an Army convoy in south Kashmir's Anantnag district today.

Separate clashes in Indian-administered Kashmir killed 10 people - five police officers, a soldier, two civilians and two suspected rebels - authorities said on Friday, as violence in the troubled region continues to spike.

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 17 (Xinhua) - Three militants, including a commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant outfit, and two civilians were killed in a fierce gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Saturday.

During the encounter, a large number of villagers gathered around the cordoned area, shouting slogans and throwing stones on the security personnel in a bid to run over the encounter site to help the hold-up terrorists escape.

All the policemen, including Ahmed, died on the spot, senior police officials said. No bodies have been recovered so far. A resident of Khudwan village in Kulgam, Mattoo is joined LeT at the age of 18 and has been an active commander for the past two years.

Lashkar has claimed responsibility for the attack, which is being seen as retaliation to a day-long encounter that killed Mattoo.

Friday's attack comes despite an alert issued by police in wake of an increase in militant attacks in districts especially south of Srinagar.

Local reports said that two civilians were shot dead in the army firing.

Twenty of the injured persons are being treated at different nearby hospitals while some of them with severe injuries have been referred to Srinagar hospitals.

Mattoo was involved in the killing of a police constable at Bogund on June 15, police said.

A police spokesman said acting on specific information, the police, along with 1 Rashtriya Rifles battalion and 90 Bn CRPF, launched an operation in Makro Mohalla of Arwani on Friday."During the operation, militants present in the area fired upon the search parties with automatic weapons".

"The loss of six policemen in Jammu and Kashmir is definitely a cause for concern".

They said mourners jostled to touch the faces of militants as they fired in the air.
