Rallies against Islamic law draw counterprotests across US

Jim Gilles asked his fellow protesters gathered Saturday (June 10) outside one of the largest Islamic worship centers in the Dallas area.

Across the street, however, a much larger demonstration of anti-hate protesters said Jones is contributing to the divide in America and that his anti-Sharia Law message is more about anti-Muslim immigration. Organizers, with an eye on the Sharia protest, said they hoped "to respond to hate with kindness and service, in the spirit of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan".

But the overwhelming majority of Muslims don't want to replace USA law with Islamic law, known as Shariah, and only "radical extremist groups" would call for that, said Liyakat Takim, a professor of Islamic studies at McMaster University in the Canadian city of Hamilton, Ontario.

He said the group was not anti-Muslim.

But while ACT claims to be a national security advocacy group, other organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center call ACT an "Anti-Muslim" group which targets refugees and Muslims in general. "The more racists get a platform, the more people get attacked". According to the Washington Post, the March against Sharia in New York City drew around three dozen participants, while a counter rally across the street drew a few hundred people blasting air horns and whistles. A woman with the anti-sharia group boasted of her rights to walk around without covering her head in the United States - unless she wanted to, which she did that day, with a "Make America Great Again" hat. But this didn't happen either, as counterprotesters shouted her group down for most of the event's four-hour duration. "It is this we stand against, not peaceful Islam", the spokesperson said in the statement Saturday.

Clashes between anti-Sharia rally goers and counter-protesters were captured on video, to include a clip where there was an exchange of punches from those in the crowd.

Both Mr. Boykin and Mr. Smith say they are opposed to Sharia Law in the United States because they would both be murdered under it.

Cavaliers romp over Warriors to avoid sweep
This was on display in the first three games when it surrendered a combined 99 points in transition to the Warriors . Golden State still have a two-game buffer and can claim the trophy at home on Monday (Tuesday, Singapore time).

No violence or arrests were reported at the event, though some counterprotesters armed themselves with makeshift shields and clubs, occasionally setting off flares, and self-described "Oath Keepers" showed up to protect the anti-sharia protesters with rifles.

Those on the anti-Sharia law side were met with opposition from those supporting the Muslim faith.

Demonstrators gathered to protest against Islamic law take part in a rally Saturday, June 10, 2017, in NY. Counter-protesters and civil rights advocates gathered in some cities to push back against the marches.

Of course, when the two side stand off like opposing armies, the hostile outcome is not all that surprising.

"It brutalizes them and robs them of their dignity, and it will not take hold in the West", she said.

She said she expected only 10-20 to walk to the Capitol and stage a "noise protest" but that then almost the entire assembled group made the walk.

Many of those opposed to the rally peacefully held signs in support of local Muslims. "We're in a secular democracy and Muslims don't seek to impose religious views on others no more than Jews or Christians".
