Sessions to appear before Senate intelligence committee

In a letter Saturday to the Senate Appropriations subcommittee chairman, Richard Shelby of Alabama, Sessions said the change in venue would be more appropriate for expected questions on the issues raised by former FBI Director James Comey's testimony to the intelligence committee Thursday.

Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island is an ex officio member of the Senate Intelligence committee.

The attorney general, the highest-ranking law-enforcement officer in the nation, said he would testify before the Senate committee Tuesday, presumably under oath.

In his testimony on Thursday, Comey accused President Donald Trump of firing him to try to undermine the FBI's investigation of possible collusion by people in Trump's campaign with Russia's alleged efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Mr Sessions removed himself from the FBI's inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in the U.S. election back in March after it emerged he had met Moscow's envoy during last year's White House race.

Sessions, among the earliest high-profile backers of Trump's election campaign, failed to disclose meetings with Russian officials during his January confirmation hearing.

Shelby chairs the Senate appropriations subcommittee.

The testimony made headlines around the world, as it was the first time Mr Comey had publicly given his side of the apparent fall-out between himself and US President Donald Trump in the run-up to his being fired in May.

He rejected prosecutor Jeff Paulsen's assertion Friday that the central question in the case is whether Yanez saw Castile's gun. Anthony police officer testified that he had been on the lookout for two suspects who had robbed a gas station four days prior.

During Mr. Comey's testimony last week, the attorney general's name was mentioned several times, raising raised questions about his engagements with Russian Federation and involvement in Mr. Comey's dismissal.

Sessions said he wanted to appear before the panel to address questions about him that arose last week during former FBI Director James Comey's testimony.

One question is whether Sessions had any undisclosed meetings with Ambassador Sergei Kislyak or other Russians during the campaign or after Trump's inauguration. The Justice Department has denied that, saying Sessions stressed to Comey the need to be careful about following appropriate policies.

Members of the intelligence committee are in the middle of an investigation and have "access to relevant, classified information", Sessions said.

The fact that Mr Sessions would delegate that task to his deputy showed the Russian Federation investigation was distracting him from his core duties.

The timing of Sessions' appearance before the intelligence panel - and whether it will be an open or closed session - was not immediately clear.

Reports suggesting that U.S. intelligence discovered an alleged Russian hack of Republican National Committee (RNC) computers during the election campaign emerged yet in late 2016, but no leaks followed.

It is not yet known whether Session will testify to the committee in public or private.
