Intel claims 30% performance boost for 8th generation processors

Intel is segmenting its new X-Series lineup into i5, i7, and, for the first time, i9 processors and increasing the core counts. The debut of its latest high-end desktop CPUs wasn't a surprise after plans were leaked earlier this month, but the series' flagship model-the 18-core, 36-thread Intel i9-7980XE-still makes a very loud splash. The Core i7 X-Series range from a $339, 4-core/8-thread model to a $599 10-core/20-thread chip.

Generally, the company's "extreme" processors are based on the previous generation's architecture, but this new line bucks the trend somewhat by offering two Kaby Lake-based chips in addition to processors based on the preceding Skylake architecture.

X299 motherboards and systems supporting Intel Core-X Series processors will be available in the coming weeks from Intel partners.

Intel's upcoming 8th generation CPUs are now code-named "Coffee Lake" and during the press briefing, Intel claimed that while engineers were initially planning on a 15 percent performance improvement over 7th gen.

Intel is also putting the new Core i9 chips inside desktop PCs for advanced gaming, VR and other data-heavy content creation applications.

Sonic Mania releases this August, available for pre-order today
The retro-inspired platformer will launch for Switch and other platforms on August 15, for US$19.99/C$25.99. The date was originally spotted in a Steam trailer for a split-second before its official announcement.

The Intel Core i9-7800X will feature 6 CPU cores, will support 12 threads, and will be priced at $434. That's only ringing in at 16 cores, which somehow seems inadequate now with Intel's announcement.

Intel also revealed the X-Series family of processors, which Intel says is its most "scalable, accessible and powerful desktop platform ever", and covers a range of processors with 4 to 18 cores. The 18-core beast at the top of the pile will retail for $1,999 (~£1,554), while the 10-core Core i9-7900X still goes for an eye-watering $999 (~£777). When Intel's Turbo Boost 3.0 technology is engaged, an individual 7980XE core can hit a top speed of 4.5GHz.

Intel is also upgrading its Turbo Boost technology on some of the higher end models of the Core X line, with what it calls Turbo Boost Max 3.0. This CPU runs at 3.5GHz with boost clock set to 4GHz and features six cores with HyperThreading. Kaby Lake-X CPUs thus are quad-core processors equipped with an 8MB cache and come with 16 lanes of PCIe 3.0 from the CPU, and will fit on that new X299 motherboard platform.

The new Core i9 Extreme Edition chip will be targeted at PC enthusiasts, gamers, content creators, and particularly developers and consumers of virtual reality content.
