Trump Orders Strong Tax Protections for Religious Organizations - White House

Trump to sign executive order to'vigorously promote religious liberty'More

The order also asks the government to issue rules that would allow religious groups such as the Little Sister of the Poor to deny their employees insurance coverage for services that they oppose on religious grounds, such as birth-control pills.

Some faith leaders have condemned Trump's order, saying it would politicize their congregations.

Calling the measure "an elaborate photo-op with no discernible policy outcome" the left-leaning legal non-profit rescinded its previous threats due to the fact that the EO doesn't really do much of anything to substantively protect religious freedom.

The 1954 Johnson Amendment restricts political activity by nonprofits, and past year on the campaign trail, Trump told a meeting of 100 evangelical and conservative Catholic leaders he would abolish that rule, at least inasmuch as it pertains to religious entities.

The statement came after Trump signed a "religious freedom" executive order Thursday.

Warriors rally for 113-111 win after Spurs lose Leonard
This is the second straight Spurs-Warriors meeting where the Dubs have stormed back after getting jumped on early by San Antonio . It's bad , and we hope he gets back soon, but I think it's a huge stretch to imply that Pachulia had any ill-intentions here.

The truth is that even if Trump never signs a pointedly anti-LGBT executive order into law, LGBTQ people are already being harmed by his xenophobic, Islamophobic and racist administration, because LGBTQ people belong to all of those groups targeted by them. It just directs the IRS and the health care system to exercise "maximum enforcement discretion" in levying penalties.

As a candidate for president, Donald Trump embraced the mistaken view that the federal government was violating religious freedom by prohibiting churches - and other organizations that received the benefit of a tax exemption - from endorsing candidates for public office. "After careful review of the order's text we have determined that the order does not meaningfully alter the ability of religious institutions or individuals to intervene in the political process", ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero said in a statement. "If they take action based on this executive order that harms our community, we will sue".

Issued on the National Day of Prayer, the order also asks the IRS to soften its enforcement of the Johnson Amendment, a provision in the USA tax code that bars churches and tax-exempt organizations from endorsing political candidates. "IF YOU'RE GOING TO WORK FOR THE PEOPLE, THEN YOU HAVE TO ABIDE BY THE DECISIONS OF THE PEOPLE " The Interfaith Alliance of Iowa said today - "President Trump's executive order is risky andill advised for the government'sinterest and for houses ofworship".

Another part of Thursday's executive order is giving "regulatory relief" to companies like Hobby Lobby who object to the Obamacare mandate for contraception in health care. The Madison, Wisconsin-based group argues in the filing that the order is unconstitutional because it grants preferential treatment to religious organizations while secular groups must still abide by the law. "We'd certainly like to keep the rights that we presently have, or at least the rights that we did have up until recently when we were challenged", says The Catholic League's Bill Donahue.
