Fallen Officers Honored During DC's Police Week Vigil

Community Remembers Fallen Protectors

The president also singled out several names of law enforcement officials who perished as a result of anti-police attacks in 2016.

Police officers and members of the public gathered Monday afternoon on the lawn of the McCracken County Courthouse for the 2017 Peace Officer Memorial Service.

The week was established by Congress in 1962 and starts Monday with National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The White House was bathed in blue lights Monday evening in recognition of Peace Officer's Memorial Day.

On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty in the USA every 63 hours, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. "After dusk on Tuesday evening, for the first time the State Capitol building windows on two floors will be lit to display a "Thin Blue Line" in a show of support and respect for law enforcement".

Law enforcement officers from across the panhandle attended the service.

Seahawks' interest in Colin Kaepernick reportedly 'legit'
All the stuff that he's doing off the field, the things that he's doing in the communities, he's just serving everybody. The former 49ers quarterback has been out of work since becoming a free agent in March.

Last week, 25-year-old Nick Provenza was shot and killed by Tarpon Springs officer Scott MacIsaac after police say he came at him with a knife.

"When an officer dies in a community it changes that community forever and I think we need to remember that", JPD Chief Mike Yaniero said.

President Donald Trump is asking the Justice Department to develop strategies to prevent and prosecute violent crimes against law enforcement.

Trump promised to fund, train, and equip law enforcement agencies around the country as part of his promise to keep America safe.

The names of 394 officers that were killed in the line of duty were read out loud, 143 of those officers have died previous year. "We thank them tremendously".

While this day, as well as this week, has been set aside nationwide to honor police officers whose lives have been lost, Ciccarelli said their sacrifice is one that is not only remembered today, but every day.
