Judge grants partial injunction against Uber in Waymo car case

Waymo Lyft to team up on self-driving vehicles

A judge rejected self-driving company Waymo's request Monday to order Uber to stop using technology that may have been stolen, the Verge reported.

Sunday's news is also significant because Uber's two biggest competitors are essentially teaming up against it. A federal judge has granted an injunction that blocks its self-driving chief Anthony Levandowski from working on the company's self-driving project due to the ongoing lawsuit.

Google's driverless vehicle arm alleges Levandowski stole trade secrets related to Lidar while working their and before founding Otto which was later acquired by Uber. "He is ruling that some of this information is stolen (or "misappropriated") and in the long run that will likely have a devastating impact on Uber".

In a statement to TC, Waymo today said that the court granted it "expedited discovery" and that the company will "use this to further protect our work and hold Uber fully responsible for its misconduct". "We look forward to moving toward trial and continuing to demonstrate that our technology has been built independently from the ground up", the statement said.

Uber has until May 31 to return the files to Waymo, U.S. District Judge William Alsup ordered.

Wall's late 3 leads Wiz past Celtics 92-91, forces Game 7
The Wizards fell one win short of their goal of 50 for the regular season, but that would certainly make up for it. However, the franchise has not played in a Game 7 since the 1979 Eastern Conference finals against the Spurs.

Waymo sued Uber earlier this year, accusing Uber of stealing trade secrets and intellectual property it had developed related to lidar, the radar-like sensors that self-driving cars use to navigate. Monday's ruling prevents Uber from using Waymo's technology on a laser navigational tool called Lidar that robotic cars use to see what's around them.

Levandowski, a co-founder of 90-person startup Otto, was put in charge of Uber's efforts to develop self-driving technology for personal driving, delivery and trucking. The following August, Uber bought Ottomotto for $680 million and hired Levandowski to lead its self-driving auto efforts. Both companies have been striving to race ahead of each other in autonomous vehicles, which many consider to be the future of transportation.

Uber has denied that it has utilized any of the allegedly stolen files, and Levandowski has since stepped aside from running the start-up's autonomous driving division while the case proceeds.

Watching Google and Lyft join forces to stymie his march towards self-driving vehicle dominance can not site well with Uber CE-Bro Travis Kalanick. It has relied heavily on General Motors for any testing and doesn't have a program that rivals Uber's Advanced Technologies Group, a department in Uber dedicated to building self-driving technology. Waymo said the thief was Levandowski, a onetime star engineer at Google and a guru of autonomous vehicle technology, who joined Uber a year ago. Levandowski asserted his Fifth Amendment right to avoid incrimination during the preliminary hearings, but Judge Alsup urged Uber to "to do whatever it can to ensure that its employees return 14,000-plus pilfered files to their rightful owner". As of a few hours ago he took a semi-major hit when a Federal judge in San Francisco ruled that the star engineer he seduced away from Waymo will be legally barred from working on the projects that we can only assume Kalanick lured him away to work on.
