Swachh survey: Indore tops list of India's cleanest cities, Bhopal comes second

The survey Swachh Survekshan 2017 was carried out by the Quality Council of India across 434 cities in the country and is based on the feedback of 18 lakh respondents. It has been a subject of concern for all Chandigarhian that the city is even not ranked under the top 10 list of cleanest cities in India 2017.

The fourth slot has been claimed by Gujarat's Surat, while Mysore, which would be first in the previous lists of clean cities, slips to the fifth place.

The lowest ranked are Gonda (Uttar Pradesh), Bhusawal (Maharashtra), Bagaha (Bihar), Hardoi (Uttar Pradesh), Katihar (Bihar), Bahraich (Uttar Pradesh), Muktsar (Punjab), Abohar (Punjab), Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh) and Khurja (Uttar Pradesh) in this order.

Cities in West Bengal have not been ranked as the Mamata Banerjee government did not participate in the Swachh Survekshan.

Whereas last year's victor Mysore in Karnataka has dropped to the fifth spot. It was ranked 32, a dramatic improvement from 2014 when it was close to the bottom at 418 among 476 cities.

Mysuru was awarded the "cleanest city" for two consecutive years and was hoping for a hat-trick. Swachh rankings of 434 cities and towns will be announced on Thursday.

Naidu also noted that India had improved its position by 12 places in the global Travel and Tourism Competitive Index.

According to a Survey conducted by the Government of India, Indore is the cleanest city of India.

The survey took into account cities and towns with a population of over 100,000.

The minister said Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab and Kerala needed to substantially step up their efforts to improve sanitation standards in urban areas.

The minister stressed that the rankings were not announced to point finger at anyone.

Of the total score of 2,000, 900 marks were assigned for performance in respect of ODF and solid waste management, 600 marks for Citizen Feedback and 500 marks for Independent Observation.

People were asked to vote on several questions as part of the survey. All the cities that were included in the survey have a population of over 1 lakh.
