International Monetary Fund bullish on Zim growth

A stacked container terminal in Hong Kong. This is no passing moment in the challenge to the international trade regime

Lagarde, a former French finance minister who has warned that a Le Pen presidency could lead to political and economic upheaval, added that a policy shift from "growth momentum to more sharing and inclusive growth" was now needed.

The panel, known as the worldwide monetary and financial committee (IMFC), is set to release the final statement later on Saturday in Washington during the spring meetings of the global Monetary Fund and World Bank.

And US pressure at a meeting of the Group of 20 finance ministers in Germany last month forced the group to strike the commitment against protectionist policies, in place since the early days of the 2008 financial crisis - a position credited with helping to prevent the Great Recession from becoming worse than the 1930s recession.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says the world's economy is on track for its strongest growth in half a decade.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was more pointed in his first statement to the IMF, calling for the Fund to enhance its surveillance of members' currency exchange rates.

"The use of the word protectionism is very ambiguous", Carstens told a news conference, when asked why the International Monetary and Financial Committee's statement removed a past pledge to resist all forms of protectionism.

The French election presents free trade advocates with a third potential blow in less than a year after Britain's European Union referendum and Trump's election on a platform to restrict imports and protect U.S.jobs. The main goal is to take advantage of trade, and "I think everyone is in line that we need free and fair trade", which is reflected in the communique, he said.

West Ham make an attempt for Chelsea and Man United target Lukaku
And it's now claimed that Everton would allow Lukaku to join Old Trafford in order to get stop Chelsea from getting their man. Last summer, Everton scoring sensation Romelu Lukaku had been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, but it didn't happen.

"The United States is probably the most open trading market there is", Mnuchin said.

"In response, the administration is undertaking an ambitious policy agenda that includes tax reform, deregulation and infrastructure investment to sustainably raise USA economic output and employment", he said. His administration has signaled that it prefers to negotiate with countries one on one rather than pursuing broader regional trade pacts.

The IMF is also bullish about the 2017 global growth and has reviewed world output projections upwards from the 3,1 percent announced in its October 2016 outlook to 3,5 percent.

Aso said there was no guarantee a bilateral trade deal with Japan would be better for the U.S. The more countries that are involved, he said, the easier it is find ways to "balance the gains and losses".

But there are risks to the sunny outlook.

In the US, the Federal Reserve has raised short-term interest rates twice since December, is on target for more hikes this year and is weighing whether to begin selling part of its vast portfolio of bonds, a move that also could drive up rates.

Rising interest rates in the United States could drive up the dollar, hurt American exporters and squeeze foreign borrowers who took out loans they have to repay in the US currency.
