Britain's Queen Elizabeth celebrates 91st birthday

The United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth II, who is the oldest and longest-reining monarch, turns 91 today. The world's oldest and longest reigning monarch will celebrate her birthday in a low-key fashion privately at her Windsor Castle home near London.

There has also been a thoroughly modern acknowledgement of the Queen's special day, also known as a serious social media response that includes special hashtags dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II. Asked if she was well during a trip to Northern Ireland past year, she quipped "Well, I'm still alive".

But the ever-popular monarch has begun handing over duties to other royals, standing down as patron of 25 bodies at the end of previous year, including the Wimbledon tennis championships.

Some took to Twitter to pay tribute to the Queen.

William joked that gifts made by his children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, were well received as they were handmade, during a BBC Radio 1 interview.

Prince Harry is also admired, receiving widespread acclaim this week for speaking out about seeking counselling years after his mother's death when he was a child.
