Trump, Xi showdown fails to materialize at Mar-a-Lago

United States and China

US President Donald Trump said on Friday he had made progress in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and expected them to overcome many problems - a marked contrast to the stridently anti-China rhetoric of Trump's election campaign.

At the G-20 meeting last September, the Chinese forced Mr. Obama to exit his plane from the rear and were less than welcoming on the tarmac, a clear and calculated snub by the protocol-conscious Chinese.

China and the USA have agreed to cooperate in their efforts to confront North Korea over their nuclear program, according to a statement released by the White House.

Beijing had hoped to use the two-day summit to burnish Xi's credentials as a powerful world leader who had successfully tamed the US's volatile commander-in-chief and Chinese propaganda chiefs battled to keep the spotlight on Mar-a-Lago despite the dramatic turn of events in the Middle East.

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, with they wives, first lady Melania Trump, left, and Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan, right, pose for photographers before dinner at Mar-a-Lago, Thursday, April 6, 2017, in Palm Beach, Fla. Controversy over the U.S. deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) anti-ballistic missile system in South Korea has created difficulties not only in Sino-American relations but also in Sino-Korean relations.

He added he explained that the THAAD deployment is purely defensive and aimed at containing North Korean missile attacks.

Ahead of the summit, a bipartisan group of USA senators sent a letter to Trump asking him to tell China to end its "unwarranted and unfair economic retaliation against South Korea" for the deployment of the Thaad system.

"We have made tremendous progress in our relationship with China", Trump said effusively at the close of a high-stakes but studiously familiar first meeting between the pair at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

Trade: Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said both sides agreed on a "100-day plan" to address their trade imbalance, without giving details.

The two leaders were later photographed strolling the grounds of Trump's waterfront resort.

-China trade more balanced.

In a briefing on the outcome of the summit, Tillerson added that while the two leaders focused on both countries' commitments to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, there "was no kind of a package arrangement discussed to resolve this".

Leading the way heading into Tuesday was Avisail Garcia with 21 hits, eight runs and 10 RBI. "I never seen anything like that". Chicago made it 4-0 in the seventh after Tim Anderson singled, just the second ball the White Sox hit out of the infield.

Trump tweeted Wednesday: "Had a very good call last night with the President of China concerning the menace of North Korea".

"The number one threat in the region continues to be North Korea due to its reckless, irresponsible and destabilizing program of missile tests and pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability", U.S. Pacific Command spokesman Dave Benham told reporters.

Since his election Trump has moderated his tough campaign tone towards China, and he welcomed the 63-year-old Xi to Mar-a-Lago's ornate dining room with an open agenda created to enable the pair build a rapport. The most powerful message for the Chinese leader may have been Trump's decision to launch USA missile strikes at Syria.

Xi was to take a sightseeing tour, including a stop at Beluga Point, a pullout on the scenic Seward Highway about 15 miles south of Anchorage.

Trump outraged China in December when he took the unorthodox step of accepting a phone call from the Taiwanese president.

The two leaders also discussed the situations in North Korea and Syria on Thursday and Friday.

Taking action against North Korea has been a sticking point in US talks with the Chinese.

The Trump administration is reviewing secondary sanctions on Chinese financial institutes and companies that are involved in illegal business with North Korea.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the US and China have agreed to increase cooperation on trying to get North Korea's to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

North Korea was at the top of the agenda at the summit in Florida despite being overshadowed by a missile strike on an airbase in Syria.

Today, China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China opposed the use of chemical weapons by any party under any circumstances but didn't comment on the US attack.
