Trump extends VA's Choice program beyond August

U.S. President Donald Trump smiles after signing S.544, the Veterans Choice Program Extension and Improvement Act, at the White House in Washington, U.S., April 19, 2017.

Trump noted that enacting the bill was "a good start", but acknowledged there is much work ahead with respect to veterans' healthcare reform.

Including Florida governor Rick Scott, A navy veteran who sued the VA in 2014 over the state's inability to inspect the VA healthcare facility. This legislation ensures we keep that promise as we continue the hard work of fully reforming the VA and enhancing health care for all veterans.

The program was to have expired in August. Shulkin said last month that the looming expiration had already been affecting veterans' appointments in cases when they were scheduling procedures months in advance. The review will include a look at whether rules governing the program are being evaluated consistently, and whether officials are taking proper steps to explain changes to beneficiaries. Shulkin also has said he wants to eliminate Choice's 30-day, 40 mile restrictions, allowing the VA instead to determine when outside care is "clinically needed".

"The idea of having seven, eight ways of doing the same thing is part of the problem, because it's confusing to veterans, it's confusing to the community providers", VA Deputy Undersecretary Dr. Baligh Yehia said past year. Of the many veterans surveyed about the facility, 61% expressed their disappointment in obtaining an appointment for urgent primary care.

"The veterans have poured out their sweat and blood and tears for this country for so long, and it's time that they're recognized, and it's time that we now take care of them, and take care of them properly", Trump said. "The care we deliver in the VA can't be, and wouldn't be, replaced by the private sector".

"It's not going to happen anymore", he said.

"Veterans in need of routine health care services should not have to wait in line for weeks to get an appointment when they can visit community health centers like MinuteClinic to receive timely and convenient care", he said.
