Oversight Chair Who Declined To Investigate Trump Not Seeking Re-Election

Jason Chaffetz announced he would not be seeking re-election in 2018, according to a Wednesday announcement on his personal Facebook page.

A few days after the incident, former independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin said in an online "ask me anything" Reddit chat session that he would possibly challenge Chaffetz in 2018. "After more than 1,500 nights away from home, it is time".

The Utah Republican, who has been floated as a potential candidate for Senate or governor, did not close the door to another run for public office in his Wednesday statement.

"For those that would speculate otherwise, let me be clear that I have no ulterior motives", Chaffetz added.

Two-term Utah Gov. Gary Herbert won't be term-limited out in 2020, but has said he isn't interested in running for a third term.

Chaffetz was first elected to the House in 2008, and he succeeded Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) as oversight committee chairman in 2015.

But Chaffetz has balked at the slightest suggestion his committee should investigate President Trump, despite the obvious opportunities to do so.

He's also faced some fierce pressure from democrats who say he isn't doing his job, and an angry crowd at his most recent town hall meeting. Allen took issue with Chaffetz's comments about the need for low-income Americans to make purchasing healthcare more of a priority than buying the latest iPhone. "I've always believed that", said Chaffetz, (R) Utah.

One of the most well-known Republican members of the House of Representatives won't be running for re-election.

Jason Chaffetz was one of the primary fixtures during the congressional investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email address and home server hearings.

Chaffetz rose to national prominence in his role as the chair of the House oversight committee. Jeanette and I wish Jason, Julie and their family well in their future endeavors.

While Chaffetz declined to investigate Trump, he did criticize a top Trump aide who promoted Ivanka Trump's fashion line during a cable TV appearance from the White House.

While the natural temptation and easy click bait for some websites are to blame the Russian Federation scandal for his decision, the political reality is that Chaffetz is likely leaving because he thinks Republicans have a good chance of losing the House in 2018, and he doesn't want to serve in the House minority.

"His razor-sharp mind, expansive knowledge and gift for communicating will serve him well when he transitions into the private sector", Herbert said.

Speaking to FOX 13 on Wednesday, Chaffetz would not rule out a run for governor in 2020.

While Chaffetz's decision removes a high-profile foe of House Democrats, the seat he will vacate does not appear ripe for pickup.

Readers, are you surprised at Chaffetz's decision to step aside?
