Trump slams Canada for tax on imported milk

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer visited Cayuga Milk Ingredients in Aurelius to speak out against the trade barriers.

The move by Canadian producers has cost USA farms upwards of US$150 million, according to a report from the Washington Post.

President Donald Trump just targeted a new opponent - Canada's dairy trade industry.

The U.S. dairy lobby has accused Canada of "systemic disregard" of its trade obligations, while the Canadian industry accused its American rival of "scapegoating".

The senators' letter further details that the action is leaving farmers with hard decisions about the future of their farms. "Canadian dairy pricing policies are upending long-standing trade relationships with American dairy companies and have resulted in the sudden loss of major contracts for companies in both of our states", the three wrote in a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Stephen Vaughn, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Acting Secretary of Agriculture Michael Young. "Because in Canada some very unfair things have happened to our dairy farmers and others".

US dairy industry groups, in a letter last week, asked Trump to urge Trudeau to halt the pricing policy that has disrupted some USA dairy exports and prioritize dairy market access in NAFTA renegotiation talks.

A spokesman for Dairy Farmers of Canada says they don't feel good about US farms going out of business, but added it's not their responsibility and instead up to the U.S.to manage their own production.

"New York's dairy farmers rely on the export of their products and we need to do what we can to ensure they continue to have a home for their milk", Ball said Tuesday.

Trump levelled the threat during an event at a Wisconsin factory where he unveiled his "Buy American-Hire American" executive order.

"There's a national surplus".

"We're making a big push and we're telling Canada if they go forward with this, they're going to pay a real price", he said, "so hopefully we can get them to change their minds, but it comes from the prime minister (Justin) Trudeau and I'm very disappointed".

"We're going to make some very big changes or we're going to get rid of NAFTA once and for all", he said. They traveled recently to Mexico City with the U.S. Daily Export Council to reinforce its commitment to the country.

A spokeswoman for Canada's dairy industry said Tuesday night there has not been any new taxes on dairy imports.

"What's happened to you is very, very unfair". He said he's staying committed to working with the president to find sensible solutions. Walker said he also planned to talk privately with President Trump about the issue during his stop in Kenosha on Tuesday.
