North Korea displays submarine-based missiles for first time at military parade

Outside analysts consider Choe to be North Korea's number two official.

It comes amid speculation that the current leader, Kim Jong-un, could order another nuclear test. A USA aircraft carrier group is headed to the region.

"If they attempt a full-scale war, we will respond with a full-scale war", Choe Ryong Hae, a senior official in the ruling Workers' Party and a key aide to Kim, said in a speech before the parade, the Times reported.

The festivities take place amid concerns that North Korea is possibly preparing its sixth nuclear test in a decade or a rocket launch of significance, such as its first flight test of an ICBM.

North Korean soldiers march past with a float carrying a picture of former supreme leader Kim Il-sung.

However North Korea refrained from a new test of a ballistic missile ahead of the holiday.

Pyongyang unveiled what appeared to be a new intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, that South Korean military officials say they've never seen before.

The event made clear how vital the state's nuclear programme is to its future ambitions as it continues to ignore growing pressure from the USA to abandon its nuclear weapons programme.

North Korea shows its Pukguksong submarine-launched ballistic missile during a military parade in Pyongyang on April 15, 2017, in a photo from North Korean TV footage. Its eventual goal is a long-range nuclear missile that can strike the continental United States.

Displaying more than one of the missiles indicates North Korea is progressing with its plan to base a missile on a submarine, which would be hard to detect, said Joshua Pollack, editor of the Washington-based Nonproliferation Review.

"If China decides to help, that would be great. If not, we will solve the problem without them", he wrote.

Vice-President Mike Pence will be in South Korea on Sunday as part of a 10-day Asia trip. "Very powerful", Mr Trump told the Fox Business Network.

The hellish hardware rolled through central Pyongyang, with ruler Kim Jong Un looking on, as the isolated nation continues to ratchet up tensions with the U.S. The General Staff of the Korean People's Army promised to take the most decisive measures in response to provocative actions by the U.S. and its allies.

Speculation that it could conduct a sixth blast in the coming days to coincide with the anniversary has reached fever pitch, with specialist United States website 38North describing its Punggye-ri test site as "primed and ready" and White House officials saying military options were "already being assessed".

Those comments came hours after the USA military, apparently given wide freedoms by Trump, dropped "the mother of all bombs" on a suspected ISIS tunnel and cave complex in eastern Afghanistan.
