NCAA returns events to NC after state rolls back LGBT law

North Carolina was awarded 10 different NCAA Division I events on Tuesday. Florida was awarded the second most with 51, while IN totaled 41, the third highest. But that's one less than the city of Pittsburgh landed all on its own.

Charlotte also put in several bids to host events, but was not selected for any.

"North Carolina's new law does nothing to guarantee that LGBT people will be protected from discrimination" said James Esseks, director of the ACLU's LGBT and HIV Project.

"Our hope is that we can start to look forward to our entertainment business picking up again and Spectrum Center becoming premium entertainment venue in the Carolinas", Whitfield said.

Though the legislation passed to replace HB2 has been criticized for still failing to protect the LGBTQ community from discrimination, NCAA President Mark Emmert signaled that the governing body could consider it changed enough that the governing body could dip its toes back into a state that often hosts championship events in various sports. Having to make it to Greenville certainly wasn't a huge burden, but it also wasn't quite the atmosphere of the Greensboro Coliseum, for example.

Six championships were not included in this bid cycle. The sixth championship, Division III women's ice hockey, does not select predetermined sites. The board also announced any championship previously award to North Carolina for the 2017-2018 season would remain in the state.

Wake County had a total of 57 bids for tournament and championship games over the next five years.

Arkansas Executions in Legal Limbo
The state has appealed that ruling to the 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals, which had not weighed in as of mid-afternoon. Ward's attorneys have argued he is a diagnosed schizophrenic with no rational understanding of his impending execution.

Less than a year after the NCAA pulled seven of its championship events out of North Carolina due to HB2, otherwise known as the "bathroom bill", the Tar Heel State will officially see events like NCAA men's basketball games return inside its borders. University of Dayton Arena has hosted 117 men's basketball tournament games, the most of any facility.

For example, the first- and second-round men's basketball games in 2020 will be held in Greensboro. And Philadelphia, Chicago, San Antonio and San Francisco will host in 2022.

"However, we recognize the quality championships hosted by the people of North Carolina in years before HB2", the statement continued.

SC was also included on the list for men's basketball sites, with Columbia hosting opening-weekend games in 2019 and Greenville hosting in 2022. Columbia, South Carolina, last hosted games in 1970, while Hartford, Connecticut, has not served as host since 1998.

N.C. State said in a press release it will host six future NCAA competitions, including the 2020 and 2022 women's gymnastics regionals.

Regional sites through 2022 were determined.
