McDonald's pit stop led police to Facebook killer

The incident highlights Facebook's awkward position when it comes to detecting, censoring and removing graphic content on its platform.

Carl White Sr. of Erie said he was driving home about 11 a.m. Tuesday when he saw the chase between Stephens' infamous Ford Fusion and several state police cruisers.

Stephens was suspected of shooting an elderly man in Cleveland, Ohio, videotaping the killing and then posting the video on Facebook.

Steve Stephens, the man wanted for killing a 74-year-old man and uploading the video to Facebook Easter Sunday, has been found dead inside a vehicle in Erie, Pennsylvania.

It marked a violent end toa 48-hour manhunt for Steve Stephens and spurred another round of criticism of Facebook over how well it polices objectionable material.

As officers approached his vehicle, Stephens shot himself, Pennsylvania state police said on Tuesday on Twitter and at a news conference. Police said Stephens led them on a two-mile pursuit before he took out a pistol and shot himself in the head. " ... We would like to have brought Stephens in peacefully and talked to him about why this happened".

However, on April 15, the carrier was pictured passing through Indonesia toward the Indian Ocean - about 3,500 miles from Korea. Their faces were covered in black and camouflage paint, and they carried rifles with grenade launchers.

In a frantic Facebook Live rant, Stephens blamed the bloodshed on an ex-lover and claimed he killed 13 people - with more murderers to come until cops caught him. He said he "just snapped".

"We have our closure in regards to our search for Steve Stephens", Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said. "Is there anything you wanna say to me?'" she said.

Stephens was on the run for days before being found in a McDonald's parking lot near Erie, Pennsylvania. He ordered a 20-piece Chicken McNuggets and french fries, according to the manager. The news station reports that Stephens filed for bankruptcy two years ago.

According to Cleveland police, Godwin's killing appears to have been at random.

Other members of Godwin's family have said they forgive Stephens and only wanted him to receive the help he needed.
