'Girls' Series Finale Recap: Two Girls and a Baby

She devotes her existence to Hannah, sacrificing her freedom in going out or having sex with a man not on FaceTime.

"Latching", the series finale, was as fitting an ending as anyone could have asked for.

Marnie, escaping a life of residing in her mother's home gym (the magic of GIRLS' writing is in the details), shows up at Hannah's new home and begs her to let her into her new life.

So Marnie calls in Loreen, because it's time for a Real Mom to show up. Not that it is not an important storyline, and not that it isn't a critical full-circle moment, watching Hannah, an often selfish, erratic 20-something, have to enter a new stage in her life.

Marnie masturbating with a British accent was a little much for me.

Girls series finale opened on a shot of Marnie and Hannah spooning. Regardless, it's a big shift from the series' beginning, where Hannah's parents stop supporting her financially and leave her to find her own way in NYC. Marnie reads off instructions from a book, but Hannah doesn't want her help.

At that point, Marnie walks into the room. He was angry and hurtful when he first found out about the pregnancy, but he quickly got on board and agreed to make it a wacky girls-who-love-boys-who-love-boys adventure in the city. Once Hannah got it in her head to move to a bucolic college town upstate and raise the baby outside walking distance from a 16 Paddles, the deal was off. Adam and Jessa are probably off somewhere snuggled in a love cocoon after almost being derailed by Adam's brief return to Hannah.

The relationship disintegrates rapidly, which is to be expected, since Marnie's insistence on singing Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" as they drove from the hospital is basically an unprovoked act of war. Hannah has turned out this way, because her mother was this way, and just as that high school girl was a mirror for Hannah, Hannah was a mirror for her mother. "We were really concerned about realism, verisimilitude", said Dunham, also noting that the show's Executive Producer Jenni Konner was always quick to point out if something "fit a little too well".

Arkansas Executions in Legal Limbo
The state has appealed that ruling to the 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals, which had not weighed in as of mid-afternoon. Ward's attorneys have argued he is a diagnosed schizophrenic with no rational understanding of his impending execution.

The problem is, this show isn't about Hannah. "Really?" He was just like, "No". My guess is Hannah will forget the minutia of Grover's early life in much the same way.

Marnie says that of all Hannah's friends, she's the one who's there.

And so, while Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) was really harsh and catty about it, I ultimately understood her need to pull away from the group to set her own boundaries, because that's the only way she could grow into the person she wanted to be.

In the final scene of the entire series, she takes the baby and he finally latches. Marnie, of course, ignores her until Hannah screams at her to shut up. Marnie summons Loreen to the house for back-up, and Loreen isn't able to break through Hannah's fog. He offers Hannah a ride and, when she refuses, he follows behind in his squad auto because she is a woman walking alone at night without shoes or trousers and making sure she gets home safely seems like the right thing to do. It's unbearable and Hannah tells her so.

She also compared her newborn to the other men in her life. Probably just so Hannah had another excuse to take hers off, which she did, and then gave them to the girl, who ran off in the over-sized jeans when Hannah gave her a piece of her mind about respecting her mom. Wandering the quiet streets, she comes across a distraught teenage girl wearing no shoes or trousers and peels off her own, offering them to what she assumes is the victim of some sort of domestic abuse. Marnie drives her home from the appointment, convincing her not to give up.

Marnie has the best of intentions, although her loyalty has an aggressive bent. She listens to her story. She has permission to lose it sometimes. She tries again to breastfeed him and this time he latches.

Leaving the majority of the cast behind in the penultimate episode dulled any of the emotional punch that you'd expect from a show's series finale. It's like a complete thought with an ellipsis at the end. There werealso some truly great scenes.

The final season of Girls was always a high wire act of maintaining its unique and often odd methods of storytelling, with its inability to stop itself from becoming just like other traditional shows of its kind. You can nearly see the lightbulb go off over Hannah's exhausted head.
