YouTube channels must win audiences before winning ads

YouTube is moving to restrict ads to channels that only have 10,000 lifetime views or more. In a bid to stop this practice, YouTube is banning channels from displaying ads until they have managed to hit 10,000 views.

YouTube will now review a content creator's activity after their channel reaches 10,000 views and "if everything looks good" will start serving ads against their content.

"This new threshold gives us enough information to determine the validity of a channel", Ariel Bardin, YouTube's VP of product management, wrote in a blog post.

Google needs to strike a balance between pleasing advertisers and those who upload videos to YouTube and are free to take creations elsewhere if unsatisfied with their shares of ad revenue. It also said that they will be employing more staff to do fact checks manually rather than wait for people to flag them. The Expanded YouTubePartner Program (YPP) would no longer serve ads on YPP videos until the channel reaches 10,000 lifetime views.

Tiago Paim signed with the Grizzlies in February and Eduardo Majalca is returning. "I haven't really thought that far ahead yet". On March 4 she committed to Adams State - a university she had reached out to - and later committed to the basketball team too.

New creators could try the YouTube Creator Academy to learn different tips on making great original content. However, these channels only represent 5% of the total views of the 13.2 trillion views on YouTube all time, the Wall Street Journal reported. The YouTube Partner Program was initially only available to select content creators at first, but it was then made available to the public a few years ago. Hence, it makes for a "hit n miss" way of making money as opposed to YouTube Partner Program.

Smaller YouTube channels will as of today find it harder to generate revenue from their content.

Lunched in 2007, the YouTube Partner Program helps creators monetise content on YouTube in various ways including ads, paid subscription and merchandise. Many brands have recently chose to pull ads from YouTube after they found out that some of their commercials played over offensive content. With the latest rules, they ensure that revenue will only go to creators who play by the rules.
