West 'warned' about Stockholm truck attack suspect Rakhmat Akilov

Sweden's Justice Minister Morgan Johansson

The country's foreign minister said information about a probe into Rakhmat Akilov was passed to Sweden via another Western nation.

Sweden's prosecution authority said on Tuesday it had revoked the arrest of a second, unidentified suspect in connection with the truck attack.

A Swedish lawyer says Akilov has admitted guilt in the terrorist attack that left four people dead and 15 others wounded.

Uzbek authorities have already initiated a criminal case against Akilov over his participation in an extremist organization. His Swedish residency application was rejected a year ago.

The Uzbek national suspected of mowing down pedestrians in Stockholm on April 7 was deported from Turkey two years ago while he tried to join the ranks of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) jihadist group in Syria, an Uzbek source told Russian agencies. The attack killed four people.

Security services previously said Akilov had expressed sympathies with extremist organisations, including IS, but had not been viewed as a threat.

Rakhmat Akilov, who has been in custody since the truck attack in the Swedish capital on Friday has confessed to being responsible for the crime, Reuters reports. Mr Bevington lived in Stockholm with his family and worked as a director with music streaming service Spotify. Fifteen others were injured in the attack, with eight still hospitalized.

Swedish police are now holding Akilov, whose lawyer says he has already confessed to driving a stolen truck through the crowd and into the front of a department store in central Stockholm.

Swedish police spokesman Jonas Hysing said in a news conference earlier this week that Akilov had been denied permanent residency in the Nordic country and was wanted for deportation before the attack.

Akilov, who was known to intelligence services, had applied for residency in Sweden in 2014 but his application was rejected in December past year, according to police.

"According to the prosecutor, the suspicions have weakened and there is, therefore, no ground to apply for a detention order", it said in a statement.
