Female kicker making college football scholarship history

Becca Longo set to make football history as first to receive D-II scholarship

Basha High School kicker Becca Longo is set to become the first woman to play college football at the Division II level or higher while on scholarship. During her senior season, Longo hit 30 of 33 extra points and nailed the only field goal attempted.

"I didn't know that until today", Longo said in a report by ESPN. "The offensive coordinator [Josh Blankenship], he told me he wanted me to come out for a visit. I thought I was signing a piece of paper to play what I love".

While there have been about a dozen documented women who have played college football, but none of those who played for NCAA-affiliated programs were on scholarship.

It's only now that Division II Adams State saw enough in her recruiting tape she sent out and the confidence she showed in the initial visit at Basha to give her an opportunity.

"It is hard to put into words what all of this means", she said. Surrounded by other athletes from her school who were accepting their scholarship offers, the event's emcee singled her out and announced that the 18-year-old was believed to be the first woman to ever get an offer from a D-II school or above.

Longo will be a kicker for the school.

"We used to trade all metals here, gold, silver, iron ore powder from North Korea - just not copper, they keep it there for military use".

Katie Hnida was the first woman to score in an FBS game when she kicked two extra points for New Mexico in 2003.

- Ashley Martin: The first woman to score at the Division I level, Martin kicked three extra points for FCS Jacksonville State against Cumberland on August 30, 2001. This might mark the first woman ever to get a scholarship for playing football.

"I'm ready to compete", she said.

"I don't look at it that way", he told the Arizona Republic. "I see (Longo) as a football player who earned it". Tiago Paim signed with the Grizzlies in February and Eduardo Majalca is returning.

"I haven't really thought that far ahead yet".

On March 4 she committed to Adams State - a university she had reached out to - and later committed to the basketball team too.
