Trump won't let reality stop him from lying about Susan Rice

Devin Nunes

While Rice hasn't said whether she unmasked Flynn, the leak of his conversation with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak where he discussed US sanctions led Flynn to resign three weeks into his term.

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Trump's initial national security adviser, is one known example of a Trump campaign official whose name was unmasked from an intelligence report and leaked to the press.

Congress continues to investigate Trump's initial claim as part of its probe into Russian Federation interference in the presidential election, despite the House intelligence head's assertion that the unmasking has nothing to do with the Kremlin. "They're saying, 'you were right when you said that.' Perhaps I didn't know how right I was because nobody knew the extent of it".

Rice's supposed unmasking requests appeared to be "normal and appropriate" inquiries for a senior government official to make, another congressional source told CNN.

Trump accused Rice of committing a crime last week during an interview with the New York Times, but he did not provide evidence to support his claim. Nunes has been consistent all along that no evidence he's yet seen would allow him to conclude what Rice did was illegal.

Asked directly if the tweet referred to Rice's actions, Trump said, 'Well, sure, we're talking about surveillance'. If anything, Rogers could have ingratiated himself to Trump and secured his job (which he still holds) by refusing any such requests and then leaking to the media about them.

US says "credible reports" Russia tried to interfere with Montenegro elections
That, Trump said, is "very bad for Russia" and "very bad for mankind" and the world. NATO's secretary general says defense spending is only part of the picture, though.

In short, Nunes had no good reason to be concerned in the first place, and Trump had no good reason to cite Nunes' concern about the intelligence reports as somehow validating his reckless, evidence-free accusation.

Watergate was "a little spat in the sandbox in the kindergarten" compared to what Susan Rice had done, White House aide Sebastian Gorka told Fox News. "There were occasions when I would receive a report in which a US person was referred to - name not provided, just a USA person - and sometimes in that context, in order to understand the importance of the report, and assess its significance, it was necessary to find out, or request the information as to who the USA official was", Rice said.

Trump told Bartiromo that "nobody" believes that.

He visited White House grounds the day before to view the information, and two White House officials reportedly helped give him the information.

Nunes last week abruptly recused himself temporarily from the Russian Federation investigation as the House Ethics Committee announced it is investigating whether he revealed classified materials, but he is still serving as chairman of the panel. FBI Director James Comey and the Justice Department refuted the president's claim in testimony to Nunes's committee on March 20. He also plans to review whether Obama's National Security Council and White House counsel collected and distributed the intelligence for reasons unrelated to foreign intelligence.
